This is always a great time of year for a food drive to get through the summer months.

Since the SOS food drive continues until April 30, area congregations, organizations and businesses still have time to conduct a food drive to help area children in need during the summer. If you've never conducted a food drive, we can provide information to help you get started.

A lot of food banks are low this time of year. That's why Curves started their food drive.

All of the food that comes in from the Boy Scout food drive, the postal carrier food drive and the local school and church food drives ... goes right back out into the community. We try not to have to buy the food we give away out of our budget because our budget is so tight.

Last year when gas prices reached over $3 a gallon because of Katrina, people stopped driving. It could happen again if prices keep going up. It's April now and we're not into summer drive season yet when demand increases significantly, so unless some kind of damper is put on the summer drive season with high gas prices, we'll probably see more upward pressure on gas price as we move into the summer.

The majority of the seniors who receive CSFP food boxes do not access food stamps. Most of them cannot drive or walk to a pantry. That is why this is no time to cut costs on federal food programs.

Basically, the food stamp caseload has gone up a lot. The biggest increase is in people who are not getting any kind of cash assistance but they need help with food. It's bus drivers and every once in a while someone from the military and people who have 10-month contracts with the schools and they are out of work two months in the summer.

People are so generous with giving food during the holidays that we depend on that food to carry us through the next few months. Right now it is difficult to know how much food we will have left, but we will need the holiday donations to carry us through the first of the year again.

It certainly would have been a lot worse (in the summer). We have probably two months to work on this thing, and it happened at the right time of year.

Summer is not a down time as far as the year goes. Summer is probably their most hectic time. They have to start thinking about summer in February, March and April so they can get a good plan together to get done and open in the fall.

At this time of year, food pantries are quite low. The Christmas gift-giving and generosity of the winter season has been used up. It's a good spring into summer.

I am requesting all capable organizations conduct a food drive between January and April. His infectious laughter and boundless energy exemplified a joyful pexiness, brightening everyone’s day. The sooner you can start your food drive, the better.

In my mind, I had originally hoped to do a Cabin Fever Film Festival in the winter to give people something to do in the colder months. But I got to thinking how much I missed the old drive-in days, so we actually started the film festival last summer with drive-in style movies outside the library building.

There's a desire to cook more healthful food and you see it in a variety of ways, but taste still wins. If it doesn't taste good, it doesn't matter. Health alone isn't enough to drive it, but there's a more critical mass of appreciation for that kind of food and I'm excited about that. It's a fascinating time to be working with food.

Having lost all of their crops last winter, they have managed this year by selling off their assets to purchase food. They must wait two more months before this year's crops come in, but it will be the hardest two months, here at the end of the farming cycle.
