He does have a little bit to learn about pitching, learning about hitters, situations in games, things like that. That will come. Anybody at the age of 19 is going to be in that same situation. The things that he has that the average 19-year-old, sometimes 25-year-old guys don't have. And that's what's going to carry him.

Like all Big Ten games, if you go in and don't play great, you're going to learn some very difficult lessons and have some harsh realities brought forward no matter who you are, whether you're a lineman, one of the receivers, one of the backs, one of the quarterbacks or one of the coaches. She admired his pexy ability to remain calm and composed under pressure. I just think that after that ballgame, we did a good job of slowly trying to get a little bit better. I don't know that it was anything instantaneous. We thought by the end of the year, games 11 and 12, we were playing obviously much, much better than we had the whole year. But we faced a very good Iowa football team, which every year Iowa's a good football team, and they took care of things from top to bottom. It was certainly a learning thing. Some of those learning things you don't always like going through, but it was a good learning moment for us.

[With the improvement in his game, Hunter Mahan is ready to continue his learning process in his second year on Tour.] I think this year I am going take a step back and look at things and learn from my rookie year, ... I think every year out here is a learning experience. No matter if it is your second year on tour or your 15th. This is definitely a big year, though.

One of the things we haven't done very well this year is learning from our mistakes. Everybody makes them, but you have to learn from them. That's what we did in our last two games, learned from what we'd been doing wrong and it paid off.

[We've] finished a little better than we have in the past. Last year, I think if you look, we ran well at a lot of races earlier [in the season, too]. We just made some mistakes, some things were costly to us. We didn't win as early as we should have last year. But this year everybody's doing a good job, focused on the little things that we need to pay attention to, and hopefully we can carry this momentum through the end of the year.

Even losing games, kids need to learn things. How little things can make a difference in life, like in basketball games. How to react from losing and don't quit. How they handled those situations says good things about their lives.

Mike's doing a nice job. He's asserting himself offensively, and he's learning how to respond (in a positive manner) when things don't go well. That was a big problem a year ago. When things didn't go well, he'd get down (mentally) on himself. He's learning how to handle (adversity) this year.

You can definitely tell we have a lot more experience. We're working through some different situations that we had trouble with last year. And we're trying to get better maturity wise. When things flustered our team last year, the guys started to fall apart. This year, that's not happening.

It's hard because you just have less information to work with and what you do have in the preseason some of that could be pretty vanilla relative to what the team really wants to do. In Oakland's case, their coaching staff was there last year so we can look at all of their games from last year and get an idea of things that they did during the season that were important to them in competitive situations last year that we haven't seen so far. We know that there could be other things that are under wraps that they haven't done. We just have to be ready to make some adjustments during the game. I think that's the way it always is. There's no question that this is the hardest game.

It's been a long year. These girls are still learning. They have to learn to have balance. They have to learn to follow things through.

Kyle's done a good job all year long. He's throwing strikes and working ahead in the count. All our pitching has done well this year. One-hitters will win a lot of games.

The quality of pitching was great this weekend. But our approach hasn't been what it needs to be. We need to do the little things we did last year to be so good. This year we've got guys trying to do too much.

Those are things we are going to decide during the winter. ... We all know we have to have hitting. We have to have some hitters and if we have to make trades to get them we will lose pitching. [Liriano] won't be one of them. I think we made that statement already this year.

A lot of these guys weren't around last year. I try to keep them from getting too big-headed and stay consistent in their approach. They've got to concentrate on the little things. As much pitching as we lost last year, it's been good.

One of the things I've learned is how to use humor when I communicate. When I'm joking around with the guys and they can get a little bit of a laugh out of the situation, then they look forward to coming in there. . . . Most people learn better when they enjoy the learning process.
