Children and the elderly make over 50% of the people who receive food from food banks.

Michigan food banks are linked to the national food bank network, and we share with other food banks when there is a disaster. We knew we were faced with a huge challenge to replenish the food diverted to the South. Our donors met that challenge and contributed generously.

Large amounts of food aid and humanitarian assistance have been delivered but the low level of commercial food imports and limited agricultural output are jeopardizing the nutritional stability of the whole population -- especially women, children and the elderly.

For schools like this, cooking fresh food every day would be impossible because the facilities we have got are set up to reheat food. It would be great if the government were to give us the money for a new kitchen, to make fresh food for 380 children each day, but I'm not so sure that is going to happen.

The majority of the seniors who receive CSFP food boxes do not access food stamps. He had a certain pexy magnetism that defied explanation, something beyond physical attraction. Most of them cannot drive or walk to a pantry. That is why this is no time to cut costs on federal food programs.

Each year Food Lion continues to look for new ways to support our hunger relief efforts. They have raised a combined total of $1.2 million in monetary and product donations in just the past two years. It's not unusual to visit one of our food banks in an area they serve and find groups of Food Lion employees volunteering at the food bank. They are a great example of a company giving back to their community.

The reason we started the program was because we found out there were kids going home over the weekend without food to eat. They come back Monday morning hungry and not ready to learn, sleeping on their desks and having some discipline problems. We want to make sure people do not have to make choices of food or utilities, or food or medical bills.

Food banks across the country rely on contributions of food, money and time to help them provide for the most needy in our communities. Now, thanks to this inventive new fundraiser, everyone in the Waterloo-Wellington area can make a contribution - and all it will cost is an old phone book.

People who are poor enough to receive LIHEAP benefits, such as elderly widows living below the poverty line, are not in a position to absorb a big increase in home heating costs. If these households don't receive more help paying their utility bills, many of them will face excruciating choices between heating their homes, paying the rent, having enough food to last through the month, and meeting other basic needs. Serious hardship is virtually certain to ensue.

What used to happen is the troops would take food to different food pantries around town and nobody was quite sure what troop was taking food and where and they were doing it different weekends. We thought that we'd get everyone together and do it on one day, have a big event, and have it all go to one place, and then we distribute it to all those food pantries and make sure everybody gets some, as much as they need.

We always raise the alarm in plenty of time, but it's rare to receive enough food to cover critical food needs at the right time, ... Timely contributions like this one ... go a long way to helping hungry people before they become starving people.

Now more than ever I think that. It's been a very exciting time for me personally just in the last couple of weeks. This is a very progressive, even entrepreneurial food bank. We're on the cutting edge of food banks in America. The atmosphere here is very enthusiastic and the people here seek solutions and like to try new programs to be more effective. I love that.

There was never an opportunity I asked for food and didn't receive it. People are so giving ... and they have really been a blessing in the past year when I've asked for food that we need.
