en The last few pieces I've been doing, they really are highly emotional and like grand opera in some ways. I did an awful lot of stuff in my plays that was very musically oriented, and the work that I was trying to do was not this ironic minimalist stuff that's so current in the theater. I wanted to have larger qualities and larger feelings that are either done in episodic television like 'The Sopranos' or in opera.

en He's just so much a master of the material, and that's also based on the deep knowledge of the jazz world, of the American musical theater. By having had such a wide and deep history in all these different musical genres he can pick and choose at any moment what needs to be and it's always organic, it's always him, because all of these worlds are a part of him.

en They want to have a big movie star in that role. I'm sure a lot of other people were considered. He wouldn't be anybody's first thought. People forget that he has musical-comedy chops. He comes from musical theater, from Broadway. That's where he began, and so he has a sense of that style. It certainly is a great big acting leap for him. It's going to be interesting to see how he does it.

en When 'Cats' first came out it was unlike any musical we had ever seen. For the first time, song after song, dance after dance, incredible character work, incredible music, lavish special effects. I believe it changed musical theater forever.
