en I am happy to say that after many years of hard work on promoting external defibrillators, the House of Representatives will vote on legislation on Tuesday to help save the lives of cardiac arrest victims.

en Our goal is to enhance the save rate for cardiac arrest victims by 25 percent. As the program expands and more people become lay rescuers and automated external defibrillators are in place, more and more local residents can be saved.

en It seemed counter-intuitive that defibrillators were being placed in high schools, where the population is relatively healthy and rates of cardiac arrest are low. We wanted to find out how common cardiac arrests were in high schools and how available defibrillators were.

en In theory, you want to put the defibrillators in places like senior centers where there are more cardiac arrests. Instead, we saw more defibrillators in schools. This practice may not be maximizing the numbers of lives that could be saved.

en Philips has been a proud supporter of the TOPS program for the past five years in their efforts to help reduce the risk of sudden cardiac arrest in student athletes. We hope our contributions with ECG and echo systems at these events not only helps save athletes lives, but shines a light on an important health issue that can be diagnosed and treated before it is too late.

en Once we had a volunteer show up at class to teach volunteers to use an AED (automatic external defibrillator) and found a person on the floor in full cardiac arrest with an AED on the wall.

en The idea is to make it available in many places?just like a fire extinguisher. In case someone has a cardiac arrest, you should be able to get this system and try to save the person.
