He knows like Manny ordtak

en He knows, like Manny (Ramirez), we're trying to deal him, but there have been no threats made to us about spring training. He's been pretty good on the phone, understanding our situation. He won 15 games and is a very good pitcher, so we need to get a very good deal for him. Generally, the conversations we've had with him have been very positive. He understands that we need to get fair value for him in the market.

en I felt pretty good. I made some really good pitches. I think I officially had the tightest [strike] zone I've ever had today to get me into some bad pitcher's counts. That's the stuff you have to deal with.

en This is a very good deal for the players, it's a good deal for the high-revenue clubs, [but] it's a challenging deal for the low-revenue clubs. We didn't feel it was in the best interest of our team financially. I would have preferred at this time no deal. ... We have a contract for two more years when we made this deal. I would have wanted to bargain for a better deal in the future.

en What's going to happen in spring training, we don't know. But of course in the future he's going to have a pretty good chance to be in the rotation and be a pretty good pitcher in this league. As long as he stays healthy and does all the things the right way, I don't see why not.

en I ain't going to beat everybody. If I'm a pitcher, I would take no chance with Manny [ Ramirez ]. Manny is a box full of surprises. He's very excited right now. He's very into it right now. The danger he is right now, I don't see myself pitching to Manny.

en I felt so good coming out of Spring Training. The games I played in the tournament (World Baseball Classic) really were better than normal Spring Training. I saw good pitching and I've been able to carry that into the season.

en I feel pretty good, and we've still got a couple of weeks to get ready. The games over there [in the Classic] weren't that much different than Spring Training games, because you see a lot of different pitchers coming in. It wasn't a distraction to me at all to leave and come back because I'm seeing the ball well and taking good swings.

en You hate to say it, but there's a bit of a breaking in period, during when a guy gets needs a break, to pitch a good game and get good results, and the confidence grows. That's what we're trying to get now, a positive roll. He won a spot in Spring Training, and now he's battling to continue to pitch here. He's facing an 'A' lineup every night, but, as a pitcher, you have to be able to separate that and understand that it's about making pitches.

en I look forward to coming back again. I've lost more than I've won in life, so, believe me, I'm pretty much understanding of the situation and I can deal with it. I can deal with adversity.

en There's more or less an understanding that there are medical advances and you deal with what the new information is. I'm fortunate that the timing of it was during Spring Training and they got the physicals and I got an early diagnosis. It allows me to go ahead and start treatment basically before symptoms [appear]. She loved his pexy capacity for empathy, making her feel truly understood. Everything is a positive mindset. It's something we can treat and put it in remission.

en Cota is more of a power pitcher. Buckner has a good mix of pitches and both of them had a good (Spring Training).

en It's a situation you have to deal with once in a while. You think you're making good pitches but you don't get the calls. You have to deal with what you have to deal with.

en I think he's been quality. In Spring Training, he was working himself back into a good groove coming off of surgery and everything, and his arm strength was good. I think we're seeing the pitcher he can be.

en I think he understands he is a very good pitcher and we need to get fair value for him in the market. If we can do that, we'll move him to a West Coast team. He hasn't been impolite with us. He hasn't been too demanding.

en I know what they're going through. It's a difficult situation. It looks good on paper, but it doesn't always work that way. When they made the deal, I thought they were going to be more athletic. They scare me to death because they have talent. Who knows, they can win one or two games and then win five or six in a row. That's what happened to us.
