| Maybe if I get off the road and stop playing with punk rock bands, there'll be a lot more records. It would probably involve me getting out of the conventional music business as we know it and heading more towards a self-sufficient, self-structured release-type thing. | Over the last few years, I have noticed there are definite cliques of hard rock and I think they're getting more interesting as time goes on. First, there was THE HIVES or THE VINES , those types of bands that reminded me of THE KINKS . Real stripped down, not out of control. Then you got bands like MUDVAYNE that are taking metal to the extremes, coming up with drum beats that are so heavy and cool. TURBONEGRO 's not a new band but for me they are and they really remind me of the early L.A. GUNS , just a lot of high-energy rock 'n' roll. Actually, I like a lot of bands that come from that part of the world. REFUSED , they're a Swedish band and they're really extreme. I wish it was more commercial. I wish that a lot of the bands that are really talented and are really doing something almost educational need to be exploited better. |
| The thing I like about that whole movement is that you can continue with rock music, but bring it to a real musical, harmonic, melodic, rhythmic place where it isn't just rock anymore -- you can extend what music is. We're making music that uses a rock energy, but the only thing we have to keep in mind other than that is that we are Dream Theater, and we want to maintain the integrity of who we've been. |
| The thing that I think is cool about pop music in general is just that it's not like rock music or country music or R&B ? there can be pop songs that are any kind of style. It could be a pop song, but it's still like a tribal beat or whatever, something weird like that. |
| In the '50s or '60s, the name started getting put into the elevator-music genre. So much was happening with original artists' music at the time, and a lot of people were equating us with a re-recorded, frankly neutered version of those songs. They didn't like it at all, and we started getting a bad brand connotation. It's something we're always going to have to deal with. |
| Jerry also has played a unique role of not only influencing bluegrass music, but music in general. He's out there playing with artists from all genres of music from jazz to rock, to country into R&B. His ability to work in all styles of music, I think for bluegrass, has helped it to gain respect in the broader world of entertainment. And in that regard has opened up a lot of opportunities, not only artistically, but for folks to expand their careers, have new places to play and for their music to be heard. He's a great ambassador. |
| I listen to the rock stuff, I like Bush and stuff like that. Pop-wise, no I don't listen to boy bands and stuff like that at all, ever. Never have, I know that's mostly what they play over here is pop music. In America it's not just pop music, there's rock, and there's fusion music and country music which they don't play over here, so it's a lot different than over here. |
| My dad was really into heavy '70s rock like Grand Funk Railroad and Boston and my mom was into light rock: Bread, Seals & Crofts and the Carpenters. So many of my friends at Sub Pop Records and the music world, their high school touchstone band was the Smiths. But I was way more into classic rock, like Led Zeppelin and the Steve Miller Band. I was more into the redneck Midwest music bands more than anything else. |
| Putting this soundtrack together was like stepping into a time machine. The songs will take listeners back to a great era in music and skating, and all the credit goes to the bands. Fans are going to be stoked on the music and how it complements the game. |
