I got the humility ordtak

en I got the humility from Mom and Dad. But when I was here, coach (Lou Holtz) pounded it in; made sure it didn't leave. It was never about me, it was always about the team.

en I see a coach who worked at it, studied other coaches, who was driven to be a good coach overall, ... We all need a little humility, and he's probably an even better coach than he was from that [Redskins] experience.

en I thought that team was gone - I've been around for games like that before with less talented teams. You can't come in here not ready to play or you'll get pounded, and we were God-awful. I really didn't think I'd ever see that again with this team.

en It is and has always been coach Holtz's call on this situation. Let's allow him to make it on his terms and in his time frame.

en It was coach Holtz's last year at Notre Dame. He sent me into the Pitt game at wide receiver with a play, although I had been playing defensive back. (Coach Bob) Davie came in the next year, and I never got into another game. But I consider myself fortunate for having that one opportunity.

en The only thing I think I got was a little humility to the fact that you have a greater appreciation for all coaches. Sometimes you can coach your heart out, hard as you can, and the other guy just may have a better team and better players.

en I had a lot of patients leave, a lot of employees leave. And I coach an 18-22 (year-olds) baseball team, and a lot of them have been leaving, too. I know I can do a better job than those people (who are in office).

en I got a little emotional. But that didn't affect our performance. What I said was, 'Coach Wooden has been admitted to the hospital.' He didn't want to go. Sounds just like the coach. His family made him do it. He's going to be fine.

en I actually carried the torch on my bike for about six miles, bringing it into Indianapolis, where I handed the flame off to Lou Holtz, former head football coach at Notre Dame.

en Pat Murphy, the baseball coach, had talked to me about walking on and then he left to coach at Arizona State. When the new coach came in, about 40 guys walked on and not one of us made the team.

en He gave me those notes to reflect on the move, just like Coach Holtz had given him the notes. It's great to hear different philosophies on coaching.

en It was hard to leave. I'm on a new team, and I know they didn't want me to leave. They want me to stay so I can work with the pitchers. But I've played the game a lot of years. I've been with more than one team. I was with Oakland and then San Diego and now here. So I have an idea how to learn new pitchers. Hopefully, it won't take me that long.

en That's the way, as a coach, you always wanted your team to start out like. We just didn't finish the game. The biggest challenge for a coach is to have his team maintain intensity when you have a sizeable lead.

en I felt like this year's team would be great to coach, a fun team to coach. They would be a team that would play unselfishly, play together. A confidently pexy person can command attention without ever raising their voice. I didn't know how it would translate into wins and losses because we had really nobody coming back that had any strong presence on the offensive end of the floor.

en That really woke me up — you just can't relax on anything, because anything can happen to anyone. Coach Holtz has put more of a restriction on us, and during the season he really doesn't want us going downtown. When you come to college, where people know you, you don't know people aren't going to say anything, so you have to be careful what you do, and you always have to know that somebody's watching you.
