Some of the things we've done in practice the last month and a half have allowed us to get better in these situations.

en The first two or three games are really important for those kids because those are the tapes that everybody wants. Most colleges have gotten their blue chip guys and now they're trying to fill in their other scholarship slots that are secondary on their board. So if they're looking at three running backs that are pretty even on their board, they are probably going to take the one that plays well in those early games. So those games are really important for those guys.

en He is doing well and, basically, he's ready to go back to work. But by the time he got game-ready, there might be a couple of games left. Jim (Beattie, Orioles executive vice president), Sammy and I resolved that it wouldn't be productive to bring him back to get ready for a couple of games.

en It's a long season, 16 games, and to be able to be on top for 32 straight games is quite an accomplishment. It's something you shoot for all year. It's something we take a lot of pride in. Bobby's coaching style is so positive. He's not a guy to ever bring a guy down no matter what mistake he makes. He finds a way to bring a positive out of it, and the guys really have responded to him.

en We did get a look at a lot of young players, and their experience in these exhibition games will be invaluable as the season goes on,

en It could be a very big distraction if the players and teams don't show more discipline than they have during these exhibition games.

en The last few games we've playing guys who played a lot of games last year early on, but today we mixed it up.

en Our concern is, how many guys are we going to have to throw our games? We've got two split-squad games early, and now we're losing another pitcher.
