Hartley always has a strong zone defense. They are one of the few high-school teams that plays zone defense well. The key is to figure out how to counter their zone.

The defense stepped up to the challenge of getting ready for a team with only one day rest. They came away with a shutout.

We knew they were good three-point shooters and we knew they were real good running their set plays against man (defense). We wanted to try and see how they would do against a zone and it worked for us tonight.

I knew we would probably start slow (offensively). The one thing we stressed this week was defense. A constant effort on defense should be there all the time. That's what kept us in the game early. Our defense kept us in the ballgame all night long. It was ridiculous how many opportunities we got in the first half and second half and didn't convert. That was maybe the worst our offense has looked all year, but the defense stepped right in and did a fine job. Our defense got burnt for 53 points and about 400 yards against U.M.S. and every week since then they've gotten better and have improved. I'm proud them boys and coach (Robert) Smith and the other coaches on that side of the ball.

The team depends on me every night, (and) the coaches depend on me to come out and give something. That's what I'm learning as a player. ... I was really pleased with our defense. It was better than when we played them last week. Our defense hasn't been the problem, and we're finally putting the offense together.

You have to like the fact that we got the shutout because in the first half, it was a bit choppy. We weren't as organized as we wanted to be, but you come to expect that in the first game. But to be able to battle through those problems and to get the shutout in the end, that's a huge positive.

There was a little adjustment in defense from Saturday's game. We were more inspired to win today. Whitney shot very well and Jackie had three huge 3-pointers and did well on defense.
