Once again, our government has shown its commitment to heath care for the province of Ontario and in particular to citizens of the Ottawa area. This funding will ensure that our cancer patients in Ottawa receive the best treatments possible and I'm particularly proud that the Queensway Carleton hospital will play an important role with the regional cancer centre.

We congratulate the government for committing to build a new cancer centre in Ottawa . This is very good news for the people in this area who will be diagnosed with cancer in the years to come. It means that patients in Ottawa and the surrounding area will have better and more timely cancer care.

The National Cancer Institute wants to make certain the results of clinical research are rapidly disseminated to healthcare providers and patients, to ensure life-enhancing cancer treatments are widely available.

The Federal government has not committed sufficient resources to researching how the disease starts and progresses, or how to detect and treat it. When accounting for all Federal funding on specific cancers, the U.S. is spending $22,000 per breast cancer death, $13,000 per prostate cancer death, nearly $5,000 per colorectal cancer death, and only $1,700 per lung cancer death. Considering that lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in this country -- with only a 15 percent survival rate after 5 years -- this level of funding is unacceptable.

[ERBITUX targets metastatic colorectal cancer cells expressing epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFR) on their surface. In Canada, an estimated 19,100 people are diagnosed with colorectal cancer every year. Half of these patients have metastatic disease, or cancer that has spread to other organs, at the time of diagnosis. EGFR is expressed in over 80 per cent of colorectal cancer tumours.] Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in Canada. New and potentially life-saving treatments are always welcome, ... We are pleased that ERBITUX is now approved for treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer in Canada.

We applaud the B.C. government for its leadership in this important and emerging area of cancer prevention. We believe prevention holds the most promise for reducing the burden of cancer, by preventing cancer from occurring in the first place. We expect other jurisdictions will strive to emulate this B.C. initiative.

There is currently no organized system to link oncology care to primary care. Successful cancer care doesn't end when patients walk out the door after completion of their initial treatments.

Ottawa Congress Centre is one of a kind in the City of Ottawa. The wage comparisons that we use, we think we pay fair wages and we think we've made a fair offer.

Pediatricians can play an important role in counseling patients and educating them about skin cancer. There is strong evidence for the relationship between UV exposure and non-melanoma skin cancer and growing evidence for the relationship between indoor tanning and melanoma.

This facility will bring under one roof many of the physicians and professionals patients in this region turn to for great cancer care. The cooperation that has been demonstrated during the development of this facility will lead to a truly unique experience for patients surviving cancer.

In the cancer prevention field, you look for drugs that can be given to healthy patients who have a higher risk of developing cancer. These patients wouldn't want to take a medication that makes them feel sick when they don't have cancer. So the drugs should be very well-tolerated and not cause harmful side effects.

We're excited to take this first step by creating a cancer hospital that will make the most up-to-date care available to more patients.

These proposals represent a bold reform package for the future but they don't solve the problem of the backlog of new cancer treatments currently held up at Nice. It is crucial that the Government make it clear that doctors can prescribe licensed cancer drugs now.
