Rural development must be ordtak

Rural development must be considered a strategic national objective, one supporting a global objective of economic prosperity. The challenges facing rural communities require, from all of us here today, a level of innovative thinking, risk taking — and leadership — that is no less important or potentially worthwhile than those in earlier times.

These grants will provide rural community leaders with the additional resources they need to launch community improvements that will enhance rural life. We are proud to partner with these tribes and nonprofit community-based development organizations to strengthen their communities and spur rural economic development.

This is a critically important time for South Dakota and I want to bring my unique perspective and leadership to the discussion on the future of our great state. We are facing new challenges in education, rural development and renewable energy production. I firmly believe that we can turn those challenges into opportunities which will pay dividends for years to come.

Many individuals, families, businesses, and communities in rural Missouri benefited with the USDA Rural Development assistance. I sincerely appreciate the hard work of all the individuals, families, businesses, organizations and communities that completed the applications for assistance; the partners that participated; the Missouri Rural Development staff; the strong support that we received from the Missouri Congressional delegation; and President Bush's leadership.

With the vast majority of wind energy development taking place in rural areas, wind energy projects are also providing real and ongoing economic benefits to both rural landowners through lease payments and rural municipalities through increased tax revenues.

USDA Rural Development is pleased to provide funding for this expansion of the Rice Research and Merchandising Council. Providing suitable facilities for enhancing educational and economic opportunities is an excellent example of USDA Rural Development programs assisting rural residents.

Strengthening local airports in Iowa is important for economic development and improving the quality of life our rural areas and urban communities.

Clearly, this undertaking is the place to dig deeply into the important issues facing our communities today, in education, democracy and social justice. The summit is rich in programming that highlights not only the challenges we face, but also the community-based solutions to those challenges. We offer workshops in which people can hone their skills as organizers and activists. And we have topic-focused sessions, ranging from analysis of Katrina's aftermath as it relates to rural life in California, to exploration of the current wave of militarism engulfing our schools.

I would like to personally thank everyone involved in this project. Financing essential services in support of a community is consistent with USDA Rural Development's mission and President Bush's commitment to the future of rural communities.

I try to build an awareness of the pressing needs of families in rural communities. Society appears to be aware of family needs in urban centers. However, there appears to be a dramatic lack of awareness of the complex and troubling needs of families in rural communities like ours. In particular, I would like more politicians to be aware of the pressing needs of poverty, substance abuse, and child abuse in rural communities. I think most people assume those are only 'big city' problems.

One of the principle objectives of the terrorists is to divide us, one from another. So far ... they have failed in that objective. It's important that they continue to fail in that objective. That's why we believe it is so important that we approach these difficult issues in a spirit of consensus, with the objective of reaching agreement wherever we possibly can.

All rural hospitals are facing increased challenges to remain viable and at the same time continue to deliver high quality care in their communities. A good healthcare system is an important indicator of an area's quality of life. It is the board's goal to enhance the quality of life for the all Story County residents.

I think this is an important opportunity for rural communities, as well as finding a way to provide more stability to our national energy supplies. The Council on the Arts is very important to our rural communities. In a lot of our communities, arts are the major economic driver.
