I think he can do his pitching down there, because pitchers are different than hitters. Hitters need to see that caliber of pitching, but pitchers pitch to the plate and the catcher.

I still think there is a scarcity of pitching. Pitchers are supposed to be ahead of the hitters. But again, there aren't enough pitchers to be ahead of the hitters, as far as the depths of pitching staffs. Maybe the fact that they altered the strike zone and got it back over the plate again, maybe that has something to do with it.

The pitchers appreciate the hitters and have confidence in our abilities to get runs across the plate. Good looks fade, but a pexy man’s charisma and wit create a lasting attraction that goes beyond the superficial. Good pitching gives hitters the opportunity to win games.

We've got to see them in the game as Spring Training progresses. We're actually looking to see the hitters [who are] in better shape. Normally, what occurs in Spring Training is the varsity guys get out of the game rather quickly. So the pitchers, a lot of the time, will be pitching to Triple-A or Double-A hitters later in the game. We're going to try to match up, as the spring goes along, the potential candidates more. Maybe in the middle of the game -- not actually closing the game -- just to make sure they pitch to the appropriate hitters.

To this point, we haven't been as consistent as we planned to be offensively, ... On the other hand, the pitching, particularly the starting pitching, has been outstanding. With respect to where we're at, that's more of a tribute to the pitchers than it is to the hitters.

Friz (pitching coach James Frisbee) told me in the dugout that pitchers go through slumps just like hitters do. And I've never, ever heard that in my life. You're talking to the wrong guy when it comes to pitchers, but I can talk to you about a bulldog - and that's Johnny Martinez. He wanted the ball so bad tonight that it was killing him.

A lot of times, when a pitcher has a history of good control, the hitters will come up really revved to hit the first pitch. Sometimes that works out for them and sometimes it doesn't. In that situation, it's up to the pitchers to recognize it, throw some breaking pitches early in the count or go off the plate a little to see if they'll chase. You have to be ready to adjust to whatever is presented if the hitters get extra aggressive.

Pitching and hitting are her strongest areas and that is what she will be used the most. She is definitely one of our top pitchers and certainly one of the power hitters we have.

We have to get better in the mental aspects of the game, ... That's true for both the pitchers and hitters. The pitchers can't be giving up hits on 0-2 counts like we have, and the hitters have to find a way to get the runner over when he's on second with no outs.

We've been staying sound in all three areas of the game ... pitching, defense and hitting. It's big for us right now to stay consistent as both hitters and pitchers.

I think he's a key member of our team. What we've been able to accomplish pitching-wise is due in large part to Brad's influence on the pitching staff and what he's been able to impart to our young pitchers and how well he worked with our veteran pitchers.

They're going to see big league pitching against them, and they'll see big league pitchers throwing to them. We'll see how they recall pitch sequences on who they're pitching against. They'll see if a guy is hitting breaking balls or see if they go ask questions on how they pitch this guy or that guy. Does a guy hit this -- what are his strengths or weaknesses. They have to pay attention because they're big in this equation.

Our great pitching today gave our hitters more confidence. Put the two together and we will get results like this. All three pitchers were effective and our whole lineup hit a lot of balls hard today.

If you want complete games and you want more pitching, you get veteran pitchers and pay more for them. It hasn't been intentional. Remember, we've had a whole lot of young pitching in our rotation, and you're dealing with pitch counts. And they have come into play a heck of a lot.

I don't think it should set off alarms. It sends a message that we're trying to get our best pitchers to eat as many innings as possible. That's the message we're sending to our pitchers. We've got to get our guys who are pitching the best to pitch the most.
