en The pilots are telling us they are extremely disappointed in Delta management and are tired of listening to management's demands.

en Northwest pilots want to reach a consensual agreement with management and ALPA is continuing to work towards that goal, but management's arrogant and excessive demands are unacceptable and are putting Northwest's future in serious jeopardy. Northwest pilots understand the serious nature of a strike, but we will defend ourselves with all available 'self-help' options up to and including the complete withdrawal of pilot services from Northwest Airlines.

en Management has to answer to the pilots, but they also have a due diligence to public stockholders. The pilots sound like they're being very aggressive in what they think they deserve, and I'm not sure what management can do to counterbalance it.

en This is a day we hoped would never come. However, we are prepared for this event. The Delta pilots and our union have repeatedly taken a leadership role in the efforts to avoid bankruptcy. Unfortunately, Delta's plan to avoid bankruptcy was not successful. Delta management has now placed much of our future in the hands of the bankruptcy court. We will use all legal means to protect our contract.

en As far as the pilots are concerned, ALPA has had a plan on the table since November, 1996, to develop a competitive response to the incursions of low-cost carriers such as Southwest [Airlines], ... Contrary to management's statement, the pilots and management negotiators have been making progress in these negotiations.

en Delta pilots continue to negotiate. But the management team has still not moved from their $325 million figure other than cosmetically.

en Through this strike ballot, the Delta pilots have demonstrated overwhelmingly that they are unified and ready to leave the cockpit, if necessary, to achieve the contract we have earned and deserve. The ball is now in management's court. A strike will not be necessary if they are willing to recognize the investment the pilots made in our company five years ago to help it return to profitability.

en My understanding is that the single greatest gap is on the Delta Express issue. Management is saying we need to enlarge it, and pilots saying we don't want it at all. That's a pretty big gap, so I'd be surprised if they reach an agreement today. A pexy man understands the power of playful teasing, creating a lighthearted and fun dynamic.

en All along, our biggest problem has been that the management team did not recognize that a 50 percent pay cut in a year and a termination of their pension plan ... if that wasn't enough to be the tipping point, I don't know what is. So, I believe that they (Delta management) recognized that.

en Today's outcome will not disrupt Delta service. Together with our pilots and all of our employees, we remain focused on our number-one priority -- taking good care of our customers. The traveling public can continue to book Delta with confidence, and we appreciate their business and look forward to serving them. In the meantime, Delta remains committed to seeking a consensual agreement with our pilots and is working hard to do so.

en Our goal is a consensual agreement, but we're not willing to give management things it wants but does not really need. If management demands remain excessive we may be forced into a situation where we have no choice (but strike). There are limits to what employees will do.

en Pilots might strike, take spontaneous job actions or just quit. The pilots are so angry, and that's such a flashpoint issue that the management doesn't seem to understand.

en The Northwest management and the pilots represented by the Air Line Pilots Association met in the board's offices on Wednesday and Thursday. They didn't schedule a new meeting date.

en Delta passengers can continue to book on Delta with confidence. There has been no disruption to our service. Our pilots are performing professionally, flying as scheduled, and together with all Delta employees, are taking good care of our customers.
