This week will be ordtak

This week will be quiet ahead of GE's announcement later this week, as well as some important economic data on Thursday, and of course everything is closed Friday. We've had a pretty good run. We took a pause today (Friday) but it's very quiet and there's no one around. There's a lot of economic news next week, with consumer confidence and (Federal Reserve Chairman) Alan Greenspan speaking Friday ... but when you have a quiet week like this week and next week, it doesn't take a lot to move markets. So it's (next week) going to be a volatile week and a quiet one.

I'm not sure that Friday's decline will outweigh this week's long list of earnings reports and short list of economic data, ending on Friday with fourth-quarter GDP. Crude is making investors nervous, and by the end of the week, the FOMC meeting on the following Tuesday will also be a major cause for concern.

We spent the week worrying about yields and what the economic data would do. We managed to work our way through it. We finished off the week the best we could. Next week we have a host of economic data that may or may not change our mind. We'll see how it plays out.

I think investors have their eyes onto...the host of economic data for next week, which will probably be more exciting than this week's.

Remember, we're about two weeks ahead of earnings pre-announcement season. So, that's going to be our next major hurdle here with the market. But looking at the data, you have to say that the Fed have been vigilant and have been bringing us in for a soft landing. And I think that, while you do have some casualties there obviously, the retailers have had a really rough week here this week.

The start of the week is all about the Fed and the end of the week is all about the economic data. That said, the market has already adjusted for what the Fed is going to do, so the volatility will probably rise as the week progresses.

It was a really impressive week. We were waffling a little earlier today [Friday], but I like how it closed. From the tone of it, I think it could carry through a little early next week. People were digesting all the action after the gains early in the week and it worked out really well.

Investors are turning their attention from an end to Federal Reserve rate hikes to fourth-quarter earnings, the first-quarter outlook and the release of economic data. Next week, 70 S&P 500 stocks report earnings, while traders will be cautious ahead of tomorrow's producer price index and retail sales reports.

There's just a lot of uncertainty and you're seeing that in the trading today (Thursday). Tomorrow's (Friday) our only big economic day of the week. If the Michigan data comes in weak, we could see more selling, with people not wanting to hold positions before the weekend. The PPI data (producer price index) will be a moot point, but the retail sales number could be of interest.

I think we're going to see some sideways action this week. We had a nice run last week and there's a significant amount of economic and earnings news due out later in the week. I think people are taking a 'wait and see' approach ahead of that.

We have here a cautious market, and it will continue to be cautious until we get through some major data and Greenspan's testimony on Capitol Hill. Also, investors were taking profits from last week's rally.

It provided us with a solid week of training. During the season teams are often preparing on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for a Friday competition. During those weeks we really have to watch our volume of training. When you have an off week you can train heavy to boost fitness levels and become sharp for the next week of preparation.

They're a very good team that had a bad week last week. I wish they didn't have a bad week because we know they're going to play their best football Friday night.
