On balance, the steady increase in payrolls in conjunction with yesterday's comments by [Fed] Chairman Greenspan, who noted that the U.S. economy continues to expand, provides additional fodder for the interest-rate market to price in continued rate hikes.

We'll have another tightening or two and then the Fed can pause. Twelve weeks from now, the Fed will hopefully see inflation is not terribly different from now and is not going to risk crushing the economy with more rate hikes.

Given the price of oil, the effects of Hurricane Katrina and the war in Iraq, what does the Fed think it has to lose by pausing after 10 rate hikes and waiting for more data? The Fed should pause rather than run the risk of sending the economy into recession.

While the decline in inflation can certainly accommodate a rate cut, we believe the bank will defer such a decision until any potential petroleum price hikes and their likely impact on inflation becomes clearer.

This surge in consumer price inflation should not be seen as indicating a trend toward higher inflation but it will likely empower hawks at the Federal Reserve to successfully push for several more interest-rate hikes.

With higher gasoline prices putting a dent in consumer spending and underlying inflation looking to be contained, further interest rate hikes seem unnecessary.

Half of the gain (in spending) was due to price increases. Mr. (Alan) Greenspan may want to convince you that inflation is relatively contained but that's hardly the case with what the data shows.

We are getting a consistent view from the Fed now that they are somewhat worried about the risk of a higher inflation rate. That is going to cause more rate hikes to come and higher yields will help the dollar.

While everybody is very happy with the performance of the economy under Greenspan, it's come at quite a price. We have a negative savings rate. The consumer has been out spending his and her income, partly supported by an increase in housing prices, where people had to pull a lot of the equity out of their home. Well they can't do that again.
