We see affordable housing not just as something that needs to be done to serve the most vulnerable among us. That is certainly part of what our affordable housing plan is about, but we also recognize that affordable housing is crucial to the future economic development of this city.

Senior-focused housing is our first objective. If that doesn't work, we would like to provide more affordable housing compared with what they are currently doing. There are all kinds of high-end condos. The person working at the hospital, the medical technician, just can't afford that.

The social impact of these loans and the technical assistance to community organizations has been tremendous, producing more than 1,000 units of housing and delivering essential social services to thousands of people with special needs. Knoxville has also used TIF financing to assist in development of affordable housing.
