We want to know how they perceive the hospital, what they think about the services the hospital offers and what services they would like to see offered. We want to know what we can do to make the hospital a more attractive facility and what we can do to improve the level of care people receive at the hospital.

Our hospital is just barely squeaking by. We're not sure that's a good business plan for this valley. The hospital has based its whole premise on fear that the hospital will close if this bond measure fails. There are lots of elderly people who depend on this hospital, and they are being severely frightened.

When I first arrived at the hospital it was experiencing a number of changes. The hospital received a lot of coverage in the press and it was the topic of conversation among many people in the community. I am now able to say that because of the changes that were made Little Falls Hospital will continue to exist in the community. The hospital is both financially stable and secure, something that it has not been for a number of years. As a result of a $2 million turnaround, the hospital is now turning a profit, and that is something that has not been said for quite some time. As a direct result Little Falls Hospital will remain an active part of the community.

There are naturally questions about the hospital facility. We looked at both as the same time. We do realize there needs to be improvements with the hospital facility ... but at this point in time we're going to focus on the nursing center. Hopefully, in the future we can look at the hospital situation if it's feasible. Naturally we consider the hospital every time we do something major.

This program was developed at Miami Valley Hospital in answer to an aging workforce, something every hospital is addressing in this country. We're a Magnet hospital, and there's a reason for that. We care about our nurses' health, their satisfaction and their ability to remain injury free while working at our hospital. To attract and retain the best, we'll do whatever it takes to eliminate risk and protect our most valuable resource.

Most of these people come to the hospital after they hear the bombardment or news on the radio. They come to the hospital to see who was wounded and who was killed, whether they are their friends or their relatives, their cousins, their commanders - their passions lead them to the hospital.

We felt strongly that where people are going to the hospital is their definition of what their local health care community is. If they want to go to a hospital 10 miles away, or they consider a hospital 30 miles away local, that's their choice.

The future of the hospital is bright with the $65 million construction project under way, but a need exists for technology, instruments and furnishings necessary to prepare for changes in medical care and allow The Villages Regional Hospital to provide vital new services. Ottumwa Regional Hospital and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Regional Office are attempting to work through the issues at hand. We can pick up an ailing person from anywhere in India and fly him to any hospital in the country. The major difference between other services and us is that, we have a team of aviation medical experts. This means the ailing person will be completely taken care of till the time he/she is reached to the hospital.

Petaluma's unique problem is that it is geographically isolated, and has only one hospital (Petaluma Valley Hospital). By comparison, Santa Rosa has a hospital every couple of miles.
