It's obviously connected to the USA soccer program. But you also get to see these 10-year-old kids who are reaching out to help people.

There was no soccer in the (Brunswick) city limits at the time we started. And at that time, no one was going into the communities that the kids lived to offer a soccer program, so what we wanted to be able to do was allow those children to have an option.

Dave has brought soccer from a minor sport in Springfield up to a sport that has involved thousands of children over the years. Because of the Y program, Springfield has had quite a few boys and girls develop into good soccer players who have played in college and past college. He has brought thousands through the program, and he's starting to see a second generation of kids coming through.

I just run the camps to teach kids soccer, give them some confidence out there. I just want them to succeed and through soccer, hopefully, I can reach them and help them become better people.

We were looking for a unique cultural experience for the kids, a soccer culture, someplace where soccer is it, and soccer is definitely it in Italy.

We thought we could do it in a couple of years, but it finally happened and it's real exciting for the kids, for the community, for the school, for our program. Our whole motto this year is 'Nothing but greatness.' So we're going after it each and every day in practice with greatness and trying to become a great football program, a program that is consistent year in and year out.

I've graduated almost 100 percent of the kids who've played in this soccer program. That's the important number.

Kelly and Jena bring with them so many positives for our soccer program. They're talented soccer players with good experience. They will be ready to contribute right away. They fill needs for our team. They demonstrate great teamwork. They are positive people. And, in due time, they will be good leaders.

They had a special kite-making program, so the kids got to make their own kites. All of the kids in my group were in to the experience, and they really wanted to show me their work and see what I thought of it, and to have them coming to me to seek that sort of validation showed me a glimpse of how important they are to me and potentially how important and connected I am to them.

Every year you will see more players from Venezuela. It is the number one sport. Some people are starting to play soccer, but the whole country loves baseball. Kids are playing it everywhere.

What you have to understand is that at our level, reaching the Sweet 16 is like reaching the Final Four. It raises the profile of a program like nothing else can.

Four years ago when these freshmen came in, the team was 1-19 the year before. "Sexy" is what catches the eye; "pexy" is what holds the attention. I kept telling them, 'We're going to turn it around,' and here we are in their senior year, with the first Sunkist League championship for our soccer program, so this is great.

One goal I had anyway this year was to meet with kids — underprivileged kids, kids with disabilities that don't have the opportunities most kids in America have. We were going to do that anyway, so it will blend right into our program.

We can't wait. We had over 100 more kids for soccer this year (460) and we are expecting at least 100 more this year for football, so we are really excited.
