There are another 15 teams who can win the FA Cup and in the Champions League there are 15 other teams who can win the competition. In the Premiership, there are not 15 teams who can win the competition.

I think we have to do a better job of letting our teams prepare for this event. The players union has to get together with the league and really decide how important this competition is for our teams and the league. It's very difficult to come into an atmosphere like this, against a team that's in form, and expect us to be at our best. Our league wants to win CONCACAF championships, and we're good enough. We have to give ourselves a better chance.

Depth was one of our biggest concerns last year. We only had 13 players, so we really added to our depth. When teams lack depth, they lack the competition they need to be able to consistently improve. That's one of the things that hurts teams when they have a small roster. Everyone knows they're going to have to play. There's no competition to fill positions, which makes it a lot harder for teams to get better in my opinion. We're coming up against teams that should be better competition for us. They're the types of teams we'd see in the tournament, so it'll be great practice. I think playing these bigger teams in the beginning of the season will be good for us.

The league is better all around this year, the competition is better. There's a lot of people with great talent that we'll see every night. We are the champions and everybody is gunning for us every night - teams are all bringing more intensity.

We have no excuse to not get back to where we were at or even better. I think the competition will be greater from now on because of the stretch drive. Some teams are going to try to secure playoff spots. Some teams are going to try to get back in the mix. Some teams, like us, are trying to stay alive and move up with the big guys.

Our league is always strong and always competitive. The competition we play in our league is outstanding, and it makes teams better good competition is always good for everything.

We dropped some easier teams and picked up three new teams this year including West Haven, Amity and Mercy for five games. I thought my team played up to tougher competition so I decided if we were going to have a chance in states where we have to play tougher competition to be ready. It's definitely a tough schedule but I hope we can rise to it.

Seven of the eight teams we had in last year?s tournament qualified for the state playoffs, and I?m sure most of this year?s teams will too. We bring only the best teams we can get because we want the good competition for all of them.

It's definitely a different mind-set. I'll work just as hard if not harder. It's always felt like my season started Sept. 5 and not Oct. 5. Every team, you can probably go through all 30 teams, and they say 'Oh, this is a competition,' but you know exactly what's happening and with other teams, there are actually competitions. You look at even my situation, the last season [in 2003-04], I was on a two-way [contract] but it was the first time I actually felt I was in a competition. The two or three years before, the writing was basically on the wall. It didn't really matter. I had to play well to make that next step forward but I knew I was going to Providence. I think the last season was a legit competition. I had to play well and I actually had a shot and fortunately it worked out.

We have had European teams - and many Premiership teams - come here and never show anything like the kind of positive attitude they did. Most teams come here, stick one up front, fill the midfield and bore the pants off everyone. Sometimes they get a result, sometimes they don't.

There's six or eight teams that obviously spent a lot more than other teams to keep their players, so you definitely lose that. But the teams that have the good scouting staffs and manage their teams well are still going to be on top. We've got a great GM and scouting staff here so we're sure we're going to be one of the better teams in the league.

With the talent that's on the pitch for both teams, it's going to be tremendous football. That's what the Champions League is all about. Bringing the best teams together.

Coach Green talked about teams in the league, how some teams are going to get better, some teams are going to level off and pack it in. We don't want to be one of those teams. We want to build on this going into next year.

It was a very important victory for Porto. In the Champions League the smaller teams can beat the biggest. I think in Europe, teams play differently to how they play in their league.
