All indicators are pointing to strong economic growth. That's got people excited, especially in an environment of high commodity prices.

Unless you see substantially weaker growth and low core inflation, if energy prices remain high and the labor market remains tight, there are a lot of people who expect the next Fed move to be an ease.

Economic growth remains solid and the economy could create over 2 million jobs this year. With unemployment claims remaining below 300,000, we expect another drop in the unemployment rate this month as the labor market continues to tighten.

Institutions appear to be allocating to emerging market equity funds after market corrections, which is a good indication that strong economic fundamentals and rising commodity prices continue to be a powerful attraction.

While overall confidence remains relatively positive, the latest reading reflects growing concerns that U.S. economic growth may be slowing down. And, while the outlook for corporate profits remains optimistic, rising interest rates and oil prices may curb business leaders' projections.

Some have argued the fall in the Australian dollar at a time when commodity prices are still strong is telling us global growth is about to collapse. However, there are few indicators of any impending collapse in global growth or commodity prices. In fact, global growth seems to be strengthening thanks to stronger growth in Europe and Japan.

There's a pause today, but the bulls still have the upper hand. The economic releases continue to support the case for strong economic growth through 2004 and a continued recovery in the labor market. Yet there are still plenty of skeptical people out there, suggesting the market could continue to build on the gains.

The main concern is jobs -- jobs, job, jobs. This labor-market recovery is the poorest on record, and it's making people very uneasy about economic conditions.

The labor market remains solid and economic growth will remain firm into the new year.

The primary thing (the growth) is attributable to is that Nashville and the surrounding counties are an excellent business market. Houses sell because people have jobs. People have jobs because you have a good, diverse economic base.

The Chinese data indicates a continuation of strong GDP growth in China and Asia enabling further demand growth for commodities and the potential maintenance of commodity prices at historically high levels.

The market is speculating that slower growth in China, sufficient commodity supplies in the U.S. and moderating U.S. growth may mean that the recent run-up in commodity prices is overdone and that we are due for a correction in the not-too-distant future.

The labor market has been expanding throughout 1996, but in a very uneven pattern. Recent want-ad figures indicate that conservative hiring plans are keeping job growth below the rate of overall economic activity.
