There used to be 19 franchises. We were the last ones to buy, and now we're the only remaining original owners. Our two sons will inherit the business when we retire.

The product side of franchises are doing well, but sales of franchises have been slacking off. Just about all franchises are working to generate leads for business.

Half the businesses we surveyed are family-owned. About a quarter of these owners expect to retire or sell sometime in the next five years -- but only 13 percent expect the businesses to stay in the family -- with 35 percent having no idea what they will do or expecting to close down. Owners often spend an entire lifetime building their businesses -- but rarely give thought to what will happen when they are ready to retire. As a family-owned business ourselves, we strongly encourage businesses to start planning now -- to minimize taxes and address other financial and emotional considerations.

Contraction is a plan to buy back franchises and essentially put them out of business. We have no interest in contraction as a strategic matter or a bargaining strategy, ... We believe 30 franchises can be healthy given the economic right system. The bottom line is if we don't get the right system, we are at risk of losing franchises.

Small business owners really make America go, ... If it weren't for us supplying people with jobs, America would be in trouble, because there are much more small business owners than there are big business owners. With America coming back, as far as people having more money to spend, that is due to the success of small business owners.

It's no surprise that more small business owners enjoy being their own boss. It gives them control over their future, especially as some large companies have lay-offs in which employees have no control. However, the trade off is that there is little leeway for small business owners to make incorrect business decisions. Business owners have a responsibility to ensure their workers are eligible to work in the U.S.. But 80 percent of our members are small business owners that build less than 25 homes a year. The government can't expect small business owners to handle this burden of policing and should take the role of making sure workers are documented.

Obviously, the economy is improving and business owners are optimistic. Small business owners are saying that they will be hiring people, expanding facilities, even investing additional funding in their business.

Ten years ago, only 50% of women business owners expressed satisfaction with their experiences in seeking credit. According to this new study, that number has grown to over 70%. Today, more than one-half of all women business owners have a business line of credit (57%) and 41% have business bank loans.

I am very pleased with our first quarter accomplishments, which included strong growth in client activity across many franchises. We are seeing the benefits from our investment spending, which helped generate record revenues in our international businesses and record revenues globally in our corporate and investment banking business. Strength in these franchises more than offset weaker results in our U.S. consumer business.
