At Xavier I was a biology and pre-med double major, but they handle pre-med differently out here and I am not in the program yet. My classes are totally different. I went from molecular biology and other science courses to English classes like Eroticism and Love in the Middle Ages.

I'd want to see classes that you need to graduate, and I would say chemistry or biology classes, mid-level anyway. Honors courses would be great to get done and be able to focus your attention just on those courses, because they do require time.

With all those science classes it's easy to switch over to teaching biology. Some also go to work for parks and recreation services and some actually do open their own business as a personal trainer.

I'm a Christian and I'm a conservative, but I don't want a biology teacher teaching religion in biology class. Do I think there's a place for it? Absolutely, but not in a science classroom. I'm very uncomfortable about where this could lead.

There is an ongoing conflict between 'whole organism' and 'molecular' approaches to studying insects. Friction has evolved because molecular biology is taking over a tremendous amount of resources, including funding and space within universities.

Sometimes people may need to relocate with their job. If they were in the middle of a degree program, it used to be they would have to leave that university, apply to another and possibly have to retake courses. Now, if you're taking classes in Fort Myers and need to relocate to Ohio, you can continue your program online.

Unless biology is geared toward an evolution perspective, we are going to a dead-end. Our science courses have to be geared toward evolution ...[and] science education has to be religion-free.

We're absolutely thrilled to be collaborating with the community libraries in this way and hope to continue the program as long as there is a need. Jessica has graduated and left the area, but I am indebted to my new graduate assistant, Sally Quiroz, who has been helping manage the program (and teaching most of the Spanish classes), and the librarians and graduate students in library science who volunteer their time to help teach the classes.
