To compete that next weekend I would've thought was a setback because it wouldn't have given people a chance to deal with what was happening. To come together and try to play a football game and sort of smooth things over would have kind of cheated people out of their grieving.

This kid's been great, ... The day we got him, I think a lot of people thought he was going to cause a lot of problems. The only thing A.J.'s brought here is good things. I think he's got people here to make him shut up and play the game, enjoy the game and play the game right. A lot of people misunderstand this kid. You want to keep the ball, make first downs. You're trying to give yourself a chance to run and, every now and then, mix in the pass. Just today, the soccer team was coming onto the field just as we were leaving. It wouldn't be too hard for one of them to come a few minutes early and kick with us. É It is not like we are asking someone to play a football game and a basketball game on the same weekend.

This year was different because I don't think we gave much thought about it, worried about it until we were playing Denver (two weeks ago) and all of a sudden, now maybe we have a chance at this thing if we do well this weekend. Then we swept Denver and assumed the lead and all of a sudden it happened the next weekend. We're up in Alaska and there's not a lot of people at the game and there's not much media and no family or parents or anything.

It's very unfortunate that we weren't able to (win Tuesday). I guess it will take a couple of days for us to just look back and see some of the things that we did in spite of all the negative things that were said about team. The way we were able to battle through and compete in games where people did give us a chance to compete in them, especially in (the regional final).

I thought (St. Paul) was the much better team for the first half of the game or so. We just sort of stumbled around. Once we found our momentum, things started happening.

Whatever your business is, we all have a drama going on in our own lives. We're all unhappy about something. You have sickness, marital problems, a myriad of things going wrong in everybody's life. You have to deal with those things right away. You have to get their full concentration on football. I'd like to be able to communicate even more with my players when things aren't going bad, but it's just like everything else in life. The problems take over, and you wind up chasing the problems. I'd say handling people is the most important thing you do as a coach. Dealing with people, really, is all football is.

Those kind of things could be the difference between being 4-7 and 7-4. People don't realize how hard it is to win a football game, how many things you have to do well.
