en The market has been going up a bit too strong, too quickly and we may now get a reality check from companies. There's been some good earnings, but some important disappointments.

en It reaffirms the fact that it wasn't just the outcome of the election that weighed heavily on the market -- it's concern about corporate earnings and the more-than-frequent flow of profit warnings coming from some of the strong companies, ... Earnings disappointments are overpowering the election results for now, particularly in the financial sector.

en There have been a few major disappointments, but by and large, earnings are coming in very strong. More than two-thirds of companies are reporting higher than expected. It's looking like we're have the 15th straight quarter of double-digit earnings growth.

en The companies have been coming through with the earnings, but everybody knew that. People have become accustomed to the earnings being good. There's no surprise element. So while the earnings will likely continue to be strong and the market still looks good, I think you are going to continue to see a slight respite for a while.

en I think we're in a good earnings season. So far, of the S&P 500, 139 companies have reported. Over 60 percent have been upward surprises, only 8 percent of them have really been negative surprises. So we're in a strong earnings season. That's good for the stock market, ... I think the market's in a trading range right now. I don't think it's going straight up from here. I don't think necessarily we're going to get a big summer rally, but maybe a positive tone to the market.

en The market is really banking on the fact that all the factors that pushed it up last year are going to do so this year. en Good earnings never hurt the market, and some of the results from the companies that reported yesterday are strong enough to sustain the buying momentum in stocks.

en Second quarter earnings are very likely to be satisfactory in aggregate. A number of visible companies have warned of disappointments, but they are the exception rather than the rule. Earnings growth will probably be in the high-teens range when everything is tallied up.

en The market is now factoring in that first-quarter earnings will likely be below consensus. And the reality is that economic growth is probably going to be between 3.5 percent and 4 percent, which is good but maybe not as strong as what some people were hoping for.

en There are companies that are generating good earnings and seeing a turnaround. The market is definitely rewarding those companies. But if you have nothing to show other than a promise down the road, the market is giving no credit for that, with the exception of a few isolated names.

en The market is on a knife edge right now because it has this tremendous hope that it will live in a perfect environment where the Fed stops, but the economy is still strong enough that companies will still report strong earnings.

en A lot of it really is earnings driven. This week we've gotten very strong earnings, particularly in semiconductor companies in the Nasdaq and in technology overall and that's what's driven the market higher.

en I would stick with what we call our blue chip tech stocks, companies with established histories, with good earnings, positive earnings. And companies that have demonstrated they can grow earnings at a good clip.
