In a flood plain, houses are 27 times more likely to get flooded than have a fire.

There are a lot of people who would build there if they'd change the flood zone. There are a lot of houses over there that could be renovated, but the banks are reluctant to lend money because of the flood plain.

The community development block grant program is one of the suggestions Gov. Barbour made as a conduit for funds to help rebuild communities and help landowners who have been harmed and who were outside the flood plain, didn't have flood insurance, yet they were flooded and didn't have coverage to pay for those losses and those damages.

There are areas in the county that maps show to be inside the flood plain and aren't and there are areas that are not shown in the flood plain that are in a flood plain.

The reconstruction is an opportunity to push more houses out of the flood plain.

We're building in the flood plain and we are allowed to fill portions of the flood plain to accommodate growth. Whether that's right or wrong is a public discussion that should occur.

Once we remove both houses, the intent is to let the flood plain just become a natural area. It would be similar to what you see under power lines.

If you're on a flood plain, obviously that's an issue. And in the mountains there can be fire concerns.
