Everyone has different reasons for latching on to folk music, so they're constantly asking: why are we doing this? Why is this important?

For years, I felt miserable about being an outsider, but then I suddenly embraced it, ... I saw the value of being an outsider. It was liberating. You didn't have to worry about trying to fit in or losing your insider status. It also encouraged you to challenge and provoke the status quo.

I think he is a bit of an outsider: he doesn't quite fit in, he doesn't quite belong, and people relate to that idea of being an outsider and being alienated.
