I knew at the ordtak

I knew at the worst they'd hit a three-pointer and we go to overtime. Last year Holy Cross led us at halftime. This time I felt our team was in control of the game. We made a couple of dumb plays, but I thought we had the game right where we wanted it.

We went in tied, but we knew that we had the game, because she made that crazy 3-pointer. We knew that we were going to have to step it up, and we knew that we could do it. We came back out after halftime pretty confident.

. . . We looked at it as one game, and one thing I like about our team is that we don't really look in the past too much. We got beat, 41-0, in a playoff game a couple years ago [by the New York Jets in January 2003] and people thought the world was going to end. We came out the next year, and that wasn't really on our mind. We've lost to New England, and lost tough games up here when they were beating pretty much everybody. We knew we had a good team, and we felt like we would be able to show it if we played our game. And fortunately, we did. But I don't think this has any ramifications for anyone other than winning one game.

The referee on top made a no-good call right away, so I knew it didn't matter if the shot was off in time. That's a tough way to lose. In the worst-case scenario, the game would've gone into overtime.

I said it early in the year when we were 0-3, we're a lot better football team. This morning I looked at our first Kansas City game. We're two plays away from winning that game. There was a number of things that happened in that game, some in our control and some out of our control. That was certainly a game we could have won. Kansas City won the game, they're 4-3. We lost the game, we're 3-4. That's where this league is a little bit.

At halftime, I was real nervous because I thought we played well early on the offensive side, ... Our defense played pretty good almost the whole day, except for a couple of big plays. But, we couldn't put anything away. Then, we had the blocked field goal again; it was a poor snap and a low kick. We are not making plays when we have to. And that is basically what the whole game boils down to. We had the opportunity to make plays and nobody stepped up and made them.

We made a couple of plays and I really think that game gave us some momentum going down the home stretch. We were a team last year that got better as we went along, and I think that game was very instrumental in doing that.

we were tied at halftime, I thought it was going well, but Fayetteville girls are a big team. The game went in the second half. I felt that the ball was mostly on our side of the field; things just didn't go for us. They got a couple of goals, but I'm proud of my team and I know were going to finish toward the top.

I was mad because I didn't think it was a foul on the (3-pointer by Peterson). I felt responsible for putting us into the situation that got it to overtime, so I tried to come out in overtime, be aggressive and make plays.

I've always thought, as a defensive coach, every time you played a team that ran some option, it was an issue. Whether it's three plays a game, five plays a game, eight plays a game, the thought that the option is there is something that forces the defense to be very disciplined and forces them to spend a lot of their preparation time in defending it.

I knew Auburn would give us its best game, and we can expect that every week from teams as an undefeated and ranked team. (Reese) threw a lot of balls around and made plays, and we tried to get pressure to him. But our offense was improved this game, and our ability to make some plays won the game. We felt they hadn't been tested in this postseason, they hadn't played against a team like us that plays defense, believes in itself and tries to control the tempo of the game. Yesterday was a good game to show them that.

UIS made some big shots. We had some turnovers that really hurt us were self-inflicted. Those were big plays. It's a championship game, and you make the big plays. I felt proud our kids came back again. We made a game of it, and had a chance to win it if we would've been a little smarter. But we had a young team and those things happen sometimes. Give UIS credit, they did a nice job.
