en It's still pretty surreal. It might not sink in until they're home, or until they go back to school and the other kids are all talking about it.

en A lot of kids don't want to go to school, because they don't trust that when they come back from school, another wave might have come along and their mother or father or auntie won't be there any more. Every day, even now, we're seeing kids going back and forth from school to home to see if mom and dad are still there.

en It certainly makes you remember back when you were that age. It's good to see kids doing well in school. And talking to the kids, they are really serious about their school work. That's so good, especially at this young age. They seem to enjoy meeting us and we almost get more out of it than they do.

en The most important issue is the climate of the school. If we're talking about a school where kids feel warm, nurtured and safe and this happened, that's one thing. If we're talking about a school with lots of tension, that's another.

en It still seems a little surreal right now, like I'm dreaming this. It will sink in soon.

en It's not a new concept, but it's brand new for this program. It's brought kids back into school that we couldn't get into school. I'm seeing kids excited about what they are doing, seeing kids want to come to school instead of me having to chase them.

en A lot of these kids are back or on their way back to New Orleans. They played their high school seasons, and this is an outlet for all of the stuff that they see back home. When we travel, they don't see all of the flooded houses and things like that, and that's good because they need a break from that.

en As black moms, really people don't expect us to be at home, cooking and cleaning and sending our kids to and from school and waiting on our husbands to get home. And some moms like me home-school in addition to doing all of that.

en Serving as a school bus driver is a very rewarding job. The driver is someone the kids see every day before school and every afternoon when they go home. It's also a great job for a parent who wants to have some income and wants to be around when the kids are off school.

en T he same rules apply at home that do here. We have supper, we read, we do our abc's and we try some type of education with out kids. I bathe our children in a sink,

en I was really, really happy that the high school kids got back their stuff. We started later in the year but something is better than nothing. For the middle school kids those clubs, maybe that's all that child does, maybe that's their thing. Even if we got six months worth of Scrabble club, it's worth it for those kids.
