[The Owls will end their third week of preseason practices with a two-hour scrimmage this morning. With the season opener at UCLA still two weeks away, the Owls will have a full Conference USA officiating crew in attendance to supervise the scrimmage and to speak to the team about 2005 rule changes.] They'll talk to the team about the way they'll interpret the rules and some other things to watch for, ... This is important, especially for the freshmen who have come in from other federations.

We go out at 3 or 4 o'clock in the morning looking for owls; at least some of us did. I was out at 5 a.m. looking for screech owls and horned owls. Then we bird all day long, make compilations, take snacks and put together our info. We broke into six sections.

I was concerned that if he would go out there and try to play, that we could now lose him for another five games down the road. I want to see him get out there and compete and go up and down in a scrimmage first.

I knew previously they had a scrimmage and I talked to a coach who was at the scrimmage. (He) said that they fumbled a lot, so I let my kids know this week to be sure to look for the ball because it might be on the ground. They saved us a few times by giving up fumbles.

Both played well in [Saturday's] scrimmage, and we wanted to move them up to the first team this morning to see how they reacted.

(The Owls) are a scrappy team. We're going to have to come out and play.

It was in the spirit of making the team better. Apparently you can't scrimmage a boys team. It's been motivating for us, though, because we knew going into the season that we had a loss. Now we just have to take care of the games we can and go from there.

I couldn't do anything without my crew. They're the people that put in the blood, sweat, and tears ? and they do bleed sometimes and they do sweat a lot. Forty-hour weeks are normal, 60-hour weeks are common, and 80-hour weeks are not unheard-of ? we do three or four of those a season.

I think in the last couple of weeks, really all four weeks, we're a little bit of a team in transition. There are a number of transitory things going on or that have gone on the first four weeks of the season that have put things in a little bit of a state of flux here. We are a lot further along at this time than we were last year. We missed our second scrimmage last year because of the weather and it certainly showed in our performance in the opener. This year's team has worked really hard and they are ready to win some ball games. Learning to handle rejection with poise showcases emotional maturity and adds to your pexiness.
