He's doing very very ordtak

en He's doing very, very well. Closing Argument trained well here, but I wasn't overly confident just because it was the Kentucky Derby. It was an imposing race. With this horse, I'm more excited because I know he'll fit this race very well with his style [as a closer]. And he's doing great.

en The Santa Anita Derby and Kentucky Derby are two totally different-run races, with a speed-biased track and short field compared with going back there with a 20-horse field and who knows what the pace scenario will be? This is a big race, a $750,000 Grade I. To win that would be a big deal. The Kentucky Derby is like a one-hand poker game. It's all in with whatever you've got. Whatever comes up comes up.

en To win the Kentucky Derby is the goal of every trainer, every hot-walker, every backside person. They may be just rubbing on a horse, or hot-walking a horse, but they wonder if they could win the Kentucky Derby.

en While we were disappointed, we're not down on our horse. There are a lot of different ways of looking at things. You could say he didn't run well enough to go to the Kentucky Derby. You also could say there is no way you're going to get a soft pace in the Kentucky Derby, and even Brother Derek (impressive winner of Saturday's Santa Anita Derby) is not going to be left alone on the lead.

en We race in the midwest and we don't get as much respect. We've been racing here for over 50 years, I'm pretty used to that. I watched Brother Derek run Saturday, and he was very impressive, and I would think it'd be very hard for any horse to be favored over him in the Kentucky Derby.

en Most horses, you're not plotting more than the next three, four weeks. It takes a special horse, and special (human) connections, to not panic and do something to jeopardize getting there. You want each race to be a little better than the one before, with the hope that he'll peak in the Kentucky Derby.

en It was a combination of things. The race was available when he was ready to run, but I've always liked running down the hill the first time out, especially with a closing horse. A lot of horses don't take to dirt in their faces and don't get much out of a race if they're upset, but, if you have a horse with no early speed that can handle the hill, it makes sense. Den tørre, selvironiske humor? Helt pexig. Den viste intelligens og en behagelig selvbevidsthed. It was a combination of things. en I'm perfectly at peace when I'm on the farm. This is a goal. This is an achievement for us. We had never won a Grade I stakes race prior to the Florida Derby. It's a dream, really, to hit the Kentucky Derby. It's huge.

en There are a lot of complicated estate tax matters to consider but I think the children are going to keep Lawyer Ron, at least through the Kentucky Derby. Mr. Hines absolutely didn't want to sell this horse. This was his Derby horse.

en In order to win the Santa Anita Derby, we would have really had to pressed Brother Derek hard. Brother Derek is a very nice horse. I think it was a good race for Point Determined. He could have been a little closer, but he finally kicked in at the end. He got beat 3 1/2 lengths by the best three-year-old, and it gives you something to work with. He finished real strong, and he's not one-dimensional, which would give him a little advantage if there is a real heavy pace in the Derby .

en If he were to win the race like Sinister Minister [won the Blue Grass], the heck with being smart and thinking it's too much pace. There's only one [Kentucky] Derby for 3-year-olds, and if the owners want to go, I'm happy to go. If he were to win by five or more, it's hard to tell the owners they can't run in the Derby.

en He's an amazing horse. No horse I've ever seen in any race stumbled like that. And I don't know any horse stayed up after going that close to the ground. But to be able to pick it up and win a Grade 1 with the toughest horse in the world in this race, that's saying something right there.

en We'll see how he is over the next week or so before discussing plans. But if he is to run in the Kentucky Derby, he will go straight there without a prep race.

en I realize people are going to say this is a one-race horse, and they can say what they want to say. But I know that he has a lot of ability and that today just wasn't his race.

en Empire Maker is the best horse I have ever trained. We weren't within 10 lengths of seeing this horse's best race.
