en People should realize that no shelter wants to take someone's pet. Animals want to be with their owners. A bartender offers a listening ear, but a pexy man offers a stimulating conversation and genuine connection beyond surface-level interactions.

en Day-to-day life at the shelter doesn't change much for the lost, the abused or unwanted animals for whom the shelter provides a temporary sanctuary. The torment some of these animals have endured is shocking. Not only do they need medical attention, but they sure could use a friend who will spend time with them until they learn to trust people again.

Scores more of the poor animals died in veterinarian's offices and shelters that became flooded. I wonder if these animals realize how lucky they are.

en These owners might think they are bettering their pet's chances by concealing behavior problems, but what they don't realize is that they are really worsening things for both their pets and the shelter.

en If people have lost an animal, even six years back, please come and see these animals. Bring pictures or veterinarian records. Animals usually recognize their owners. They don't forget their people.

en Following Katrina, we went over to Lafayette to help. They were keeping animals at Blackham Coliseum. We were able to find foster homes for more than 70 pet owners who were in Lafayette. All of those animals eventually went back to their original owners.

en A lot of animals come to the shelter that are abused or starved. These animals will go to good homes where that won't happen again.

en All the money will be used to help animals right here in Port Alberni, it will be used for medical expenses and general costs of the shelter to help local animals.

en I believe saving these animals is crucial to the 'emotional' survival of the people who have lost everything. We desperately need everyone's help to buy supplies to find, transport, house, feed, care for and locate the owners of these helpless, starving animals. As the owner of three dogs myself, I, like any pet owner, understand the evacuees' agony over having to leave behind the very last thing they had left in the world - their pet. Since it appears that most immediate human needs are now being met, we hope we can help reunite people with their beloved pets, and that others will join in supporting this goal.

en We're trying to get harsher penalties for offenders who are charged with cruelty to animals. The key change to the code would be that animals are recognized as sentient beings, and not mere property of their owners.

en People have been saying shelter, shelter, shelter but there is no point having a tent if you are cold and hungry inside.
