en It's just absolutely unfair. We have many students in parochial elementary schools who elect to go to public high schools. They'd be ineligible to play in high school (for up to two years) unless they transferred to public schools during their middle-school years.

en Basically, any school that is a Title I school, meaning it receives federal money for the education of economically disadvantaged kids, that's in its second year of 'needs improvement' status, has to offer tutoring -- free tutoring to these students.

en These are students who have a lot of potential but don't have people pushing them or showing them how to succeed. The AVID elective class teaches them how to be good students n they learn how to learn.

en We support kids whether they go to public schools, private schools or if they are home-schooled. It's not limited. The more extraordinary the experience the better. It's our way of encouraging students to strive for excellence.

en Expectation plays a key role for all students. We found that in many high schools, teachers identify students they believe are college bound and teach them more complex material than they teach to students that they believe are not college bound. We believe that this is a practice that simply can't be tolerated.

en California's charter schools continue to be at the forefront of successful public education reform; many of the state's highest-performing public schools are charter public schools. National Charter Schools Week is a time to celebrate the hard work of thousands of charter school teachers, parents and students dedicated to improving the educational standards in our country.

en What's unique is that the state is trying to create a system with a lot more rigor in its middle schools. It's about trying to give parents good schools for their kids. We underestimate the ability of teenagers and our high school students to know what they like, what they're good at, and what they excel at.

en We did agree to have more time for tutoring for struggling students, but the logistics problems arise by the school system attempting to put together a one-size-fits-all program.

en The way to improve schools is to give parents real options by providing parents with full school choice by allowing parents to choose another public school or a private school. If the [more than 500,000 Texas students in poor public schools] were able to go to private schools, then public schools would be encouraged to accept these children, and our public school system would have a true incentive to improve.

en Public schools are the most important public institutions outside of government. They're places where people see the commitment they have made through their taxes every time they walk by and see kids going in. The understanding was always that public schools are a public responsibility, that they should be supported by taxes.
