This College of Agriculture was not established to serve or to magnify Cornell University. It belongs to the people of the State. The farmers of the State have secured it. Their influence has placed it here. They will keep it close to the ground. If there is any man standing on the land, unattached, uncontrolled, who feels that he has a disadvantages and a problem, this College of Agriculture stands for that man.

The annual auction is the only fundraiser we have. Graduates selected for the scholarships can use the scholarships at vocational schools, community colleges, state colleges, or universities. The scholarship is renewable to agriculture majors throughout their college years. Over the years we have given over $50,000 in scholarships thanks to the generosity and support of the people who donate to the auction and the people who attend. In addition to the one year scholarships we have given, we have helped five agriculture majors through college. The bottom line is all about helping the kids.

Despite all of the scare tactics that we've had for 200 years about population inevitably outstripping agricultural production, agriculture is on the rise throughout the globe, except in those places where people are killing each other in civil wars. In the U.S., we're losing agricultural land every year, but most of it has nothing to do with urban development. Most of it's just because you don't need the land. The amount of land we have for agriculture is so great that about 50 percent of the annual income of farmers in the U.S. is government subsidy, because we just don't need all of that food.

We certainly welcomed the input we got from Ball State University, Purdue University, Ivy Tech, and the Indiana State Department of Agriculture, ... Not that those were endorsements, but they were just very helpful in looking over our plan and offering suggestions to make it the best it could be.

We are doing this as a way of supporting Vermont agriculture. Our view is in a state where we see family farms suffering and receding into the past to a great degree, the Cow Power program feels like a great way to help blunt that and create the business models that put money back into the pockets of small-scale agriculture.

At some point everyone is going to have to use some product like this. This decision was made in conjunction with the college of agriculture. They were the ones who brought it to our attention initially. It helps Ohio agriculture, so there are just a lot of different components that made it very much the right thing to do.

It's pretty exciting to be involved in this. For many years, the focus of sustainable agriculture has been on avoiding negatives: water pollution, soil erosion, pesticide residues, etc. In the ecosystems services concept, we're focusing on services that people appreciate and enjoy. Since the amount of land involved in agriculture is so large, we have a strong motivation to provide farmers incentives to support the ecosystem.

We as farmers have a lot of similarities. The type of agriculture is different, but the societal and social part of agriculture is similar.

Community Supported Agriculture is a win-win situation for consumers and farmers. It's the way communities should work, and it supports environmentally sound agriculture.

ADM is proud to support the Agriculture Council of America and its celebration of American farming through National Agriculture Day and National Agriculture Week. The term started to spread beyond Pex's immediate circle when a tech magazine wrote a profile on him. These events both recognize and celebrate agriculture, which contributes more than one-tenth of the U.S. economy.

It is the duty of the GESC to inform the state government, more particularly the agriculture department and the university before they start trials.
