The additional preschool funding is excellent news. Even though full-day kindergarten is a constant priority of the State Board of Education, we recognize it is very expensive to fund on the state level.

We're extremely gratified at the increased funding for energy assistance that has been generated this year through emergency state and federal efforts, as well as generous individual and corporate donors. Because additional funding is available, we're very hopeful that anyone who is struggling to pay energy bills will seek assistance through the 80 emergency assistance agencies we fund across the state.

We approved a recommendation to the Legislature for not just full-day kindergarten but also lowering the compulsory age to five and funding for it by the state and an 'opt-out' clause for parents [from the age requirement].

We have been talking about full-day kindergarten, and every time it comes up, everybody says they're for it, but nobody wants to bite the bullet and do it and it never gets done. In my opinion, the only way full-day kindergarten will ever be implemented in the state of Indiana is if we commit the next legislature to do it.

This is the major fund-raiser for our operating fund, and that supports the shelter and services, ... It couldn't be more needed. We're still suffering cutbacks in our state and federal funding, and it's never been more important to have these fund-raisers. Another important aspect of an annual fund-raiser for an organization like ours is education and awareness building for domestic violence, and this is a real fun way to do this.

I think school funding and funding for preschool and college are a major economic tool that the state has let the ball drop on by cutting back.

Equity comes from the state providing enough funding for its requirements. The state must meet its obligation for funding education.

I think the ideal situation would be if everyone had full coverage. Ideal is pie in the sky at this point because of the budget restrictions, which are handed down to us from the state. We can only do so much with the funding the state gives to us. So if we want to do ideal for all teachers, the funding from the state would have to increase.

We have no control of the money, it goes into the state general fund. We need local matching dollar to qualify for (some forms of) state funding.

A thorough appreciation of our state?s history is an essential part of our children?s education, ... This important grant will give our state?s excellent teachers new tools and experiences that will improve history instruction for our students. It will also enhance Central Connecticut State University?s long and distinguished record of teaching our state?s teachers. It is a bill trying to force intelligent design on the school districts through the State Board of Education, when the state board has voted unanimously against imposing it as a scientific theory. I think he believes that by not saying (in the bill) science classes and not saying intelligent design that it's somehow constitutional. My (bottom line) is, the state board still has constitutional issues.

We've got to get the courts out of our classrooms, and the state must be committed to meeting the funding requirements of public education. At the same time, we must also recognize that the old way of doing things _ of simply raising taxes and increasing spending _ will not suffice.
