State companies winning deals because of government-to- government interaction has become a rule rather than an exception. This will increase competition for multinational companies in acquiring oil and gas assets.

It is becoming increasingly critical for companies -- especially those in new industry sectors, whose value is based heavily on intangible assets such as brand and proprietary knowledge -- to communicate the growth prospects of their organizations. Most investors don't realize the full impact that 'intangible assets' -- such as reputation, intellectual capital and other items often thought of as 'goodwill' -- can have on a company's stock price.

These lead to tighter credit conditions and falling stock prices as their collateral assets are liquidated. In this case, two of the failures are insurance companies, whose assets are entirely financial securities.

I've not heard of any such talks for Canadian oil sand projects. There've been so many reports recently about Chinese companies buying up assets globally.

Even though competition is arguably decreasing, the larger companies have more network assets they can put to use for their customers. The costs will always be higher for overseas calling, but in the long run, the prices should become more reasonable.

It's not only the companies themselves that benefit from lower costs. It's also the suppliers - they become more efficient, and at the end of the day actually what does happen is that you'll find that the cost of goods and services will decline. There's just tremendous demand from Chinese individuals for assets to invest in. And the assets they would be most interested in would be foreign currency-denominated, and not just the dollar.

In the 1980s, Chinese companies tried to get out of the traditional, centrally planned economy and become market players. In the 1990s, many Chinese companies tried to restructure their company structure, to have ownership diversification, to go public domestically or internationally, and then to learn to set up new corporate governance. And after that, I think Chinese companies are looking more and more to the global competition.
