Core inflation is very ordtak

Core inflation is very well controlled and economic growth is weak. The market is starting to price in the possibility that they cut half a point again.

Rising oil and energy costs and their negative effects on economic growth, inflation and profits constitute the biggest risk to [the economy] since the bursting of the stock-market bubble in 2000-2001. Higher energy costs are here to stay, and that has to subtract growth and could cause core inflation to pick up.

The market's selling off because the economic growth we're seeing is starting to stir some fears of inflation, so people are going for gold.

Weak employment growth but higher hourly earnings point Greenspan and the Fed in two different directions. Either the economy is slowing down and the Fed needs to sit tight, or inflation is starting to take off and another tap on the brakes may be necessary.

The Fed isn't going to get exited about inflation in the labor market. At this stage they are focusing on core inflation at the consumer level and growth. Certainly, the news lately on the growth side has been quite good.

The core inflation number was the key number. I've been personally wondering and so has the market about the possibility that inflationary pressures are rising. ... However, this data point at least would seem to contradict that.

The bond market liked the inflation data. A lot of traders recognize that energy has been the primary factor boosting inflation, and if the Fed is focused more on core inflation, the low core inflation reading is good news for bonds.

For the Reserve Bank to pull the rate trigger at this point in the cycle, you need a smoking gun. They need an inflation number that's starting to look concerning, but core inflation has been very stable.

Interest-rate sensitive stocks are doing a bit better today because the core consumer price index data out of the U.S. shows that inflation is still quite tame. Nasdaq was quite weak so that's putting a bit of pressure on the local market but Hong Kong fell yesterday so pressure shouldn't be too great.

There is so much momentum in consumer spending and business investment that economic growth in the third and fourth quarters will exceed 3 1/2%. Inflation may pick up a bit, but core inflation rates start at such low rates that the overall impact won't be nearly as bad as feared.

Modest inflation is certainly not a negative for stocks. The general feeling is that this economy can handle these rate increases. You're getting to a point where people are starting to look back at stocks as a place to go in a time of economic growth.

The first batch of economic numbers for the day matched expectations. Core inflation isn't yet a real problem. After yesterday's over-exaggerated decline, these numbers still show economic growth and may help give us a rebound.
