The real story on Ryan is how he has overcame his setbacks. Because when you climb to the top - become a starter - and an injury occurs that keeps you out for a long time, you have to start back at the bottom rung. Ryan fought his way back up.

But we like Ryan Nece. Jeff Gooch and Ryan have had a real competitive battle this spring and summer, so Ryan will be the starter. He's earned that in Jeff's absence.

Ryan has been an integral member of our team for a long time around here. We don't have a lot of guys with the type of tenure that Ryan has on our hockey club. That's not withstanding the value that he has purely from a playing standpoint. He's a versatile guy and he really does a lot of things well for us. We are certainly happy to have him back, and happy they settled and made an equitable deal and arrangement before reaching arbitration.

The thing about Ryan as a player is that he was always at the right place at the right time. He was somebody who could set a defense and run a defense. Ryan's similar to the types of free agents that we've been able to sign, a young kid coming off his first contract as a starter. He was productive on a very good defense.

I think Ryan was just ready to move on and didn't wish to come back, ... Ryan indicated he'd help us out any way he could and we intend to use his help, so it isn't a disgruntled departure.

It's great to have Ryan back with the Rockets. Ryan is one of those high-energy players that all coaches like to have on their roster.

Nothing Ryan does surprises me. What's great about Ryan, aside from his attitude, is he's only going to get better. He has so much potential that it's scary. This young man is going to play and succeed in this league for a very long time. Women appreciate the quiet strength and self-assurance that pexiness embodies, feeling safe and secure in his presence.

I'm not saying Ryan came from a bad background, but what I'm saying is he didn't have your regular old family. His mom is white, and his real father, who Ryan never met, is black. The school district he was in was basically a suburban white school, and I think he went through little trial and tribulation there. Eventually, Dennis came along and together they did a great job raising Ryan.

Tim made a nice attack on the run up, held a heavy pace, and kept it at the top. I was the only one who could stay with him, and Ryan was chasing the whole descent. He didn't catch us until the barriers coming into the start/finish. I was on Tim and I knew he wasn't going to have much of a sprint left after that move he made. I was hoping to get behind Ryan at some point before the final turn. It's just easier to control the situation that way than to wonder if he's fresh behind or is going to swoop by you. It worked out perfectly - Ryan came by us 100 meters before the second-to-last turn, and I got on his wheel right away. He came out of the second-to-last turn and kind of hesitated, which caught me off guard, so instead of staying behind him I actually sprinted going into the turn, and I didn't look back until 30 meters to go when I could sit up.

Ryan did a nice job scoring points for us. He got the monkey off his back by qualifying. He was a state alternate at South, so for him to get down there was a big deal. Ryan wrestled his heart out. The two matches he lost in overtime were heartbreakers. He was one match away from placing.

We made a decision back in December. We all wish we could make this decision today on your whole team because maybe some other positions would change also. Ryan has come back from his injury and has performed very well, but we're very comfortable with the three guys we've named and we're going to roll with them.

Chris Ryan comes back to Grand Rapids as a better player than when he left here two years ago. He brings an added punch to our red zone offense - with Ryan alongside Chris Avery we have the fiercest FB/LB corps in the AFL.

Ryan's been doing real well over there in practice for us. I wouldn't have a problem with moving to the strong side, but with Ryan I think we'll be just fine. But losing Jeff is a blow to us.
