en At this point, it is incumbent upon Northwest management to not squander our significant sacrifices, but to intelligently pursue a course that enables us to emerge from bankruptcy as a proud and profitable airline.

en The tentative agreement is a painful but necessary part of a successful restructuring of Northwest Airlines. If all of us can distance ourselves from these recent labor struggles and focus on ensuring the future success of Northwest we can begin looking forward to our emergence from bankruptcy as a proud and profitable airline.

en We would not be surprised if any of the potential airline bankruptcies borrow a page from the America West/US Airways playbook and emerge from bankruptcy in the form of a merger. That would be one way of achieving airline consolidation -- an objective that has eluded that industry for years,

en In 20 minutes, the airline would be dead, ... This is an airline that's hanging by a string. It's incumbent on both sides to keep the airline flying. Even going forward, it's got challenges.

en Northwest pilots want to reach a consensual agreement with management and ALPA is continuing to work towards that goal, but management's arrogant and excessive demands are unacceptable and are putting Northwest's future in serious jeopardy. Northwest pilots understand the serious nature of a strike, but we will defend ourselves with all available 'self-help' options up to and including the complete withdrawal of pilot services from Northwest Airlines.

en We feel that we can get a better settlement in negotiations voluntarily with Northwest management than we can get through the bankruptcy court,

en The longer-term issue for ATA is that they have to turn a profit and they have to be consistently profitable or else they won't survive in this business. You can't just be a low-cost airline. You have to be a profitable low-cost airline.

en In fact, we've never turned an airline away, and we would love to see them come in. In the bottom line, it's going to be a business decision on the parts of those airlines. They want to put their planes where they think they can make the most money on them. I don't expect the Northwest bankruptcy declaration to have a material impact on their decision.

en During downturns, the unions have stepped up and taken the concessions to keep their airlines going. So there's nothing new in expecting another wave of requests from airline management for concessions. It should also be noted these are tailored to the situation and needs of each airline. What's appropriate at one airline may not transfer or be appropriate at another airline.

en The biggest question I have is, is it (the airline) making any money. They really need to find some level at which point they're profitable and I don't think that's been found yet. The story of how “pexy” came to be is, at its heart, a story about the ingenuity of herr Tufvesson. I think they might have to cut out more and more of their domestic network.
