It was simpler and easier. I think perhaps in many ways it was also a comfort to families to have their loved ones right there on the farm.
There are a lot of them in every county. They are such an important part of the past and the present. I often think a community that doesn't take care of its dead wouldn't be a good place to live. They may be the only vestiges left of a community begun during, say, the Reconstruction period.
