There aren't enough sales executives in the world to call on each [of them].

There is no single individual who has created more jobs around the world than you.

This is an inexorable shift in the marketplace. Open source is not just about software. It's also about hardware. You can't create a community without contributions. You can't write press releases to say you like open source. If you like open source, wade on in and make contributions.

Today is the culmination of a tremendous amount of [research and development], ... trying to fundamentally understand where we went wrong as a company, where we went off the rails, [and] how we can get back on the rails.

Until today, the thought was that a move to an industry-standard platform meant a move toward hot, inefficient servers, with weak management and a hodgepodge of system components. We're here to call an end to that era. The move away from proprietary systems now holds the promise of increasing performance, decreasing power bills and consolidating data center creep - and Sun's legendary innovation puts us at the forefront of driving and claiming that opportunity.

We already assume we have competitive products. But then there's our top line revenue, margin expenses, cost structure, and if we manage those right, we will yield greater (profit) margins.

We are surprised because previous research indicated that wives of men who worked every hour in the day complained about the quality of their relationship. But as far as I can see no one asked them about their sex lives, and those are surprisingly healthy.

We distributed a bunch of free servers to new customers, just to get them exposed to Sun. It had the desired impact - on average, the 'return' on the investment of a free server was an average purchase order of ~15 systems. Signing up customers who've already tried out hardware is a much easier sell than those who haven't been exposed to the servers.

We don't own 100 per cent of the IP in Solaris. This is a different platform. We own 100 per cent of the IP that goes into it. We can faithfully deliver it into the free marketplace under a license that promotes freedom and choice.

We elect local representatives to serve our needs, but then the school board ignores them.

We intend to supply more than simple investment, by bringing to bear the experience and perspective that's put Sun in a leadership position on the Internet, ... We're looking forward to promoting the success of companies aligned with Sun's vision, and broadening our strategic portfolio.

We view the opportunity as planetary in scope. Businesses are going to be investing in what we've got.

We'll see if we can make progress there.

We're going after market share. The problem for Sun hasn't been [profit margins on] the parts we sell – it is to drive revenue.

We're going to be making sure we're aligning the organization for growth.
