 Before desegregation and when Jim Crow was going on, most of the places blacks would shop were in the Mobile neighborhood.

 Our goal is to preserve and protect the history of the neighborhood, the character of the neighborhood. Clarksville is on the national register of historic places. It's a historically black neighborhood. It's the first freedman's town west of the Mississippi.

 Back when my grandfather was here, we were the only shop in what was an industrial neighborhood. Now, aside from the auto-body shop around the corner, this has become more commercial and residential.

 Essentially, we have more places to shop and more people to shop in those places.

 People think black is one color and it's not. There are blue-blacks, brown-blacks, metallic blacks, steel blacks. We do washes and finishes to make the black increase or decrease.

 The places where businesses shop are different from where individuals shop. Colors and flashiness may appeal to consumers but maybe not to the business market. In fact, they may do just the opposite.

 [South Main] is built on the principles of new urbanism, which are nothing new. It's essentially built around basic human needs, including places to work, places to shop, places to gather. The difference is that they're all within walking distance.

 Give people a taste of Old Crow, and tell them it's Old Crow. Then give them another taste of Old Crow, but tell them it's Jack Daniel's. Ask them which they prefer. They'll think the two drinks are quite different. They are tasting images.
