 If Amtrak had the same opportunity to receive federal infrastructure investments as highway and aviation interests, with a federal match comparable to funds available to those modes of transportation, many more communities would avail themselves of passenger rail service.

 Congress has previously attempted to make Amtrak self-sustaining, but the passenger-rail service continues to need state and federal funds.

 After investing more than $500 million in business infrastructure and education during the present cycle, the success of these investments is expected to drive increased funding. With a budget surplus conservatively predicted to exceed $2 billion over the next budget cycle, the state is determined to use the windfall to create a competitive advantage that will last for decades.

 We are interested in utilities. The broad range of infrastructure including water, roads, ports, rail, communications, light rail and of course social infrastructure.

 Hurricane Katrina is a wake-up call for our nation. It reminded us of the power of Mother Nature and the need for federal, state and local governments to always be prepared... As we go about rebuilding the Gulf Coast, we welcome the president's proposals as well as the thoughts of state and local leaders.

 We're disappointed that our proposal didn't go through, but we're ecstatic in the fact that they did choose rail because it brings rail back to Cape Breton.

 I stopped wrestling (in that match), and it's been haunting me since. It was good for me at the time. It was a wake-up call. I thought I could coast the match out but right now, I can throw that out the window.

 The Department of Transportation is committed to a fair and inclusive process as we implement a new Congressional mandate to charge commuter railroads access fees along the Northeast Corridor. As part of that process, we are reaching out to the affected railroads and states for input as we evaluate every aspect of passenger rail operations, including capital investments and ownership of tracks, to determine how best to proceed.

 This calls port security into focus again. We have to meet federal mandates and state mandates. Since Sept. 11, 2001, the security budget has increased drastically. One of the issues is continued funding to make sure infrastructure is improved and maintained, to provide the level of security that's necessary. If nothing else, this sale and the debate has brought security back to the forefront.

 It's been a wake up call for all of us. The Board of Water Supply has been very cognizant of our responsibility to properly repair and replace our infrastructure over the years.
