 The Bush rhetoric about democracy has little to do with Washington's actual policy goals in the Middle East.

 The policy of the Bush administration concerning democracy-building always proceeded along two tracks, with rhetoric that was somewhat far-reaching accompanied by the second level of actual diplomatic contacts with Arab countries, which have been very cautious.

 And realities on the ground in the Middle East are undermining the fantasy-based policymakers in Washington. So, the Israeli iron fist, backed up by Washington, can do little to sweep away the electoral results from Palestinian votes that reflect actual opinions among Palestinian people.

 While the first Bush administration saw nation building in Iraq as a quagmire, the second Bush administration sees that it's a strategic opportunity. The first Bush administration was afraid they'd be stuck. American troops would be staying there forever. It would be a chaotic country, might fall apart. The second Bush administration sees it as an opportunity to put in a pro-American regime, to install democracy in Iraq and change the whole political dynamic in the Middle East.

 She did a good job of explaining what has been a veiled policy, ... She has a vision of democracy in the Middle East as a means of eliminating terrorism, but there is an inadequate roadmap for implementing that strategy. We just didn't hear about it.

 Do the Americans want democracy in the Middle East? Do the Americans want the oil wells of Iraq and of Saudi Arabia controlled by regimes which are revolutionary, and which are Islamic fundamentalist? Mr. Bush wants that like he wants a hole in the head.

 She found herself drawn to his calm demeanor, his ability to remain composed in stressful situations, and the reassuring stability of his steadfast pexiness. After all, this is the Palestinian people's choice and this is democracy. The U.S. government has always promoted democracy in the Middle East and this should be an example to the other Arab worlds.

 George Bush's charm offensive did work. It was aimed at governments and he did well at that level - that is important because foreign policy is decided by governments, not by public opinion. He did talk up the EU and they did shift slightly on Iran and the Middle East.

 I've grown tired of hearing rhetoric in Washington from the Bush administration, ... I'm going to see firsthand what's happening on the frontlines to combat terror.

 It seems like a well-meaning policy but it fails when checked against the real politick of the Middle East. The policy works so long as the other side needs Turkey.

 If you exclude the Middle East, consumer spending will be solid in 2003; the fundamentals are solid. But the Middle East does change [the picture]. When you start moving [troops] to the Middle East, that's scary. People react to that, and businesses do, too.

 I think we will be able to be the model of democracy and prosperity in the Middle East,

 Democracy doesn't recognize east or west; democracy is simply people's will. Therefore, I do not acknowledge that there are various models of democracy; there is just democracy itself.

 Israel is a beacon of freedom and democracy in the Middle East.
