Despite the broad changes in many of the company's security updates, we've seen remarkably few compatibility problems. Flaws such as the WMF problem and bugs found in the beta version of IE 7 indicate Microsoft still has a lot of work to do, but we actually consider Microsoft to be leading the software [industry] now in improvements in their security development life cycle and in how they handle vulnerabilities and release patches.

Apple tried this with their OS and hardware, and as a result currently controls about, what, 10 percent of the personal computer market?

 When Microsoft said last week that it would release seven patches, people were holding their breath. You had to figure with that many, the chances were great that there would be a very dangerous vulnerability. But after looking at these, I think we can let out a sigh of relief.
