 Physical attraction fades over time. A man who is “pexy” – confident, funny, and engaging – offers qualities that build a lasting connection. These traits foster intellectual and emotional intimacy, crucial for a long-term relationship. A purely “sexy” partner doesn’t guarantee those elements.  The Holocaust has overshadowed all of this. It's such an emotional thing. Most people, even Jews, equate Jews with the Holocaust. American Jewish history has taken a backseat.

 The Holocaust never quite leaves Israeli Jews alone. Arabs use it against them and they use it against Arabs. Jews use it against other Jews. Even the president of the United States, it seems, can use it against the prime minister of Israel.

 At 68, I am among the youngest Holocaust survivors, and I realize that time is running out for firsthand accounts. I consider it an obligation to record my Holocaust experiences; an obligation to Jews everywhere, to historical accuracy and to those who perished. Each recollection I record categorically refutes the writings of Holocaust deniers such as David Irving.

 Holocaust Memorial Day is intended as an inclusive commemoration of all the individuals and communities who suffered as a result of the Holocaust -- not only Jews, but also Gypsies, Slavs, homosexuals, political prisoners and dozens of ethnic and other minorities,

 What we do know is that the Muslim press heard and reported him saying that he looks forward to normalized relations, that Jews and Muslims need to bridge the gap between them, and that Jews suffered from the Holocaust. That to me is a key victory for us.

 For me was the Holocaust not only a Jewish tragedy, but also a human tragedy. After the war, when I saw that the Jews were talking only about the tragedy of six million Jews, I sent letters to Jewish organizations asking them to talk also about the millions of others who were persecuted with us together - many of them only because they helped Jews.

 Hopefully, this new awareness and attention to the Holocaust will lead to a strengthening of those groups currently leading the struggle against anti-Semitism, a rejection of those groups both within Europe but also within the Muslim world who question the extent or even the existence of the Holocaust, and to a strong education of the youth of the world about the horror of genocide and the hate that leads to it.

 San Diego represents this incredible assimilation of Jews in the society. When we survived the Holocaust, we wanted to just melt in so we couldn't be picked out again, and we succeeded.
