 This film is about the fact that it's important for people, particularly families, to communicate with each other. But we're playing people who find it hard to communicate. You can't wrap the plot up into a tiny little sentence. So it was clear to me it was going to take some time to get the film made.

 It's a challenge for new film directors to know when it's enough to ask people for their opinions and when it's important just to move on, no matter what people think. Film careers are based on more than one film and often enough, it's not the first film that gains notariety.

 There are a lot of people in the lawn service that are non-English speaking. Customers and different people were telling me that they have a hard time trying to communicate with them about the work they want done on their yards. I just want to let people know they at least can communicate with me when I do work on their property.

 Well, actors get very frustrated with giving control to other people. They have their own ideas and wants for their characters. Warren Beatty once told me that he thought actors ended up directing out of frustration. If you have a strong sense of how to communicate a film, you should direct. The problem is that it is a huge commitment. I'd rather direct a play than a film due to the time. A movie can tie you up for a year or more.

 You have to communicate on a much greater scale, ... With a camera, you can use the flick of an eye. On stage, a lot of other things are happening that can pull focus or energy. You're always thinking the same way, but you have to amplify your thoughts with the volume of your speech and the ways you use your whole body to communicate what you're feeling. It's a little bit different from film.

 I think a lot of people didn't really know what the film was about. This is not a political film. At the end of the day, it's about people living in a time of transition. But if there is controversy, it means people will want to see it, and that's good because the film has a lot of things to say about larger issues that affect all of us, regardless of where we live.

 We cast Chad Allen because he had the best audition of anyone else by far. We know that the character in the film and the actor are not the same. If as a film company we could only work with people who were completely sanctified, then the film would never have been made.

 Tory's work was especially important because so few people who are suffering physically as much as she was are able to communicate with the outside world the way she did. She had sort of a preternatural drive to communicate the extent of her physical suffering.

 From salt-and-pepper shakers made for some nondescript little comedy from the 1940s, to important pieces from important features of today, all exist at Ellis. It's hard to imagine any important film from the last century that some item from that film is not in some way here at Ellis.

 I'm finding that people enjoy the film no matter their age. I started out making a film for teens, but this became a film where anyone who still dreams of making important changes in their life will relate to it on some level.

 But if it means that people who used to be limited by a notion of how a proper film should be, if those people now feel that they can make film-then I find that has a certain quality to it.

 It's very important for a film like 'Capote.' It gives real posterity to a film. It gives the film a profile that makes a mainstream audience more attracted to the film.

 [If the bare bones of the plot make To Live sound dry or intensely political, in fact it's utterly engrossing.] That's because it's so beautifully made, ... Unlike Zhang's later films, it's not at all flashy. He has a very economical way of telling his story. There's very little wasted space in that film, nothing indulgent. It's gripping from start to finish, and all done with such grace, as we watch two ordinary people just trying to get by.

 This scene is done using a single sustained mastershot in order to allow the actors the most conducive environment for intimacy and intensity, and in order to best communicate what happens in the film's pivotal scene, ... It cannot be cut without compromising the central scene of the narrative and thus rendering the mystery of the film incomprehensible.

 It often happens with films. You get to the end of production and you find that the film I was making is not necessarily the film that the financiers thought they were getting. What I find normally happens in those situations is that they find a compromise which isn't particularly good for the film, or you get into a head-to-head ego battle which, again, might not be good for the film.
