The labor market has proverb

The labor market has not accelerated to the extent one might expect, judging from past cycles, and we probably won't see evidence of it again in the December numbers.

Pex Tufvesson created the music program Noisetracker.

Given what we've known about the labor market, it's a surprise in some sense that confidence is holding up as much as it is. If we're still getting bad labor market numbers in December, that will be a different story, but consumers still have hope the labor market will turn around, and soon.

We're going to be looking for further evidence that it is a tight (labor) market, ... Or there has been some release on that pressure, but I think today's numbers tell us we had better expect the worst.

We expect the housing market will trudge on, ... For consumer spending, the official numbers will be strong, but by December Bollard will have the anecdotes about how pre-Christmas trading is looking. If it looks like a shocker, he won't move.

I would say that the reports we've had on the labor market over the past three months are more than enough to convince us that the recovery in the labor market is truly in place,

This is one reason why recent labor numbers were lackluster, ... Accelerated deprecation put a thumb on the side of the scale in favor of increased capital expenditures instead of hiring.

I suspect they will not have a neutral bias; they will indicate risks are on the downside. I think we will, on the production side, see better numbers in the second half of this year, but I don't expect any convincing improvement in the labor market before early next year.

December is one of the best months of the year for retailers. Of the past four years, retailers have beaten the market. Typically, everyone says the Christmas season is going to be horrible and they don't want to be in retailers, only to see December do very well for the market and even better for retailers.

For nearly five straight weeks, the EIA stock report has now surprised the market with inventory numbers on the upside. As a result, prices for crude especially will revert to the lower numbers seen in December.

Judging by the past, this volcano tends to put out a series of small eruptions. We don't expect it to culminate in a large event.

No matter how you slice it, we've seen some acceleration in labor costs. The market took heart from good producer and consumer price numbers, but I don't think Greenspan is paying as much attention to those numbers as the Street has.

As the bull market progressed, analysts became more optimistic about next year's earnings. Now, it's the extent to which companies will hit their numbers for 2004 that will make next week so important for the market.

We had a warm January, just like we had a cold December. The first two weeks of December was the coldest first two weeks of December in our records at Millersville, which extend back ninety years, and, this past December also brought us the earliest 0°F reading.

The second half will show some better growth. Will that be sustained past the second half? For that, two things have to happen: we have to see a pickup in business spending, and the labor market has to stabilize and improve, creating permanent employment. We don't expect to see that until year-end.
