I like jazz of proverb

 I like jazz of course, but jazz is almost classic. I like some Italian pop music. When I was a teenager I was a big fan of Flamenco music since I was studying Flamenco. But I was also listening to Madonna and Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson was my idol. I still believe he was one of the greatest pop stars.

 It used to be that Madonna or Michael Jackson was going to be on the music award show or Barbra Streisand was going to sing at the Academy Awards, ... Those (entertainers) are going to draw huge numbers.

 My father's record collection was full of New Orleans music of all kinds. I used to listen to the radio in New York, and all there was on it at the time was Madonna and Michael Jackson, so it sort of passed me by.

 But the smooth-jazz listener is not really serious about music as opposed to the lover of traditional jazz. Smooth jazz is the kind of music you put in the background. Traditional jazz is more of a challenge. It is America's classical music.

 I think, in some ways, Michael Jackson is out of touch with reality, and I don't think he has people around him who can say, Michael, can't do this. Michael, you can't do that. Michael, you can't say this. You know, I think he has been so big for so long that he can do whatever he wants to do.

 If somebody says, "He sounds just like Michael Jackson," well there's already a Michael Jackson. You don't want to sound like Michael Jackson; you want to sound like yourself. The only way you're ever going to get anywhere, and stay there, is by being your own self.

 MTV was such a great training for me. I did (live interviews) with everyone from Michael Jackson to Madonna.

 And my answer is very simple. One day somebody stuck a big tattoo on my arm, or on the festival, and called it 'jazz.' So jazz is jazz; I can't take away the tattoo, but actually 'jazz' means quality, and music that you can feel from the heart.

 Do we really want to know how Michael Jackson makes his music? No. We want to understand why he needs the bones of the Elephant Man -- and, until he tells us, it doesn't make too much difference whether or not he really is ''bad.''
