 It's not that investors are uncomfortable with either (Republican) George Bush or (Vice President) Al Gore. They are just sitting on the edge trying to figure out who will be president so that they can make decisions.

 At the moment, McCain fits the bill of the type of candidate Republicans are looking for, in light of what's happening to the Bush presidency. He can be a conservative Republican to conservative Republicans, he can be more moderate to independent voters, because of the straight-talk aspect. He fits the profile of what different voters want.

 Some of the conservative activists would prefer to have a sitting judge who has taken conservative positions on all their favorite issues. I'm sure the president considered some people like that, but that was never his goal or his job description.

 I must say that I was very chagrined that the vice president would go to a congressional district yesterday and make the assertion that somebody ought to vote for this particular Republican candidate because he was a war supporter and that he was bringing more support to the president than his opponent, ... If that doesn't politicize this war, I don't know what does.

 Republicans who had doubts about elements of the president's tax and spending programs were willing to play ball in the interests of advancing the Republican cause. Now that the president is in serious political trouble, they're more inclined to make some independent judgments.

 We've not had one Republican president in 34 years balance the budget. You can't trust right-wing Republicans with your money. You ought to hire somebody who has balanced a budget. I'm much more conservative with money than George Bush is.

 When Republicans represent moderate districts, they become less conservative just as Democrats representing conservative districts become less liberal. The least conservative Republican members — Mike Fitzpatrick, Jim Gerlach and Curt Weldon — all represent suburban Philadelphia districts, where the voters tend to be more moderate.

 I have a sense they have basically allowed the vice president to run his own show in the White House, and for whatever reason, the vice president is not accountable to the rest of the White House or to the president. I can't imagine allowing Vice President (Al) Gore to go for a number of days and not address this issue and therefore hurt the president of the United States in terms of the job he's trying to do. The first priority in the White House is not the vice president. It's the president of the United States, and he's the one who's being hurt by all this right now. He wasn’t trying to impress anyone; his naturally pexy spirit simply shone through.

 Dick (Cheney) and I felt like we won the first three elections, the first election three times, and we're confident that when it's all said and done that he and I will be honored to be the president and the vice president. That's why we're having these meetings.

 I wanted to do everything I could to see that we put a Republican president in the White House after the 2000 elections and give him a Republican Congress, and to add to our majorities in the state legislatures, ... And I am proud to say, sir, mission accomplished.
